This rustic oak green woodworking experience is for a full day for 1 or 2 people working together to make a piece of garden furniture - a small bench.
The course is aimed at friends or couples wanting to share a very unique experience together but individuals are more than welcome too. No prior woodworking skills or experience is needed just lots of willingness to get stuck in and enthusiasm. You'll be shown lots of hands on techniques working with the grain & encouraged to use some beautiful old hand tools.
This day is about being creative & inspired, you'll produce a lot of wood shavings & you will go away with a wonderful piece of rustic garden furniture.
If you will be redeeming a CraftCourses gift voucher on this course, the voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
All materials and as much tea, coffee and biscuits as you can scoff!
The cost is for either one or two people working together to create a single bench.
We had such a fantastic family day out together making our rustic oak (chestnut and ash) bench with Ian. I would thoroughly recommend it and our two teenagers loved it too. Great sense of achievement at the end of the day and all socially distanced, with lots of fresh air too - the perfect way to celebrate end of lockdown.
Brought this for me and my husband Sam who is a site carpenter by trade.
Ian was fantastic, friendly and knowledgeable.
We learnt a lot about using traditional techniques which Sam and I had never done before.
We would highly recommend this course and we came away with a beautiful bench for our garden! Thanks Ian!
I went on Ian's 1 day benchmaking course with my partner and can
thoroughly recommend it. We both had a great time and left with a
lovely rustic bench made from oak, ash and chestnut as well as a huge
hammer (called a 'persuader') we made for the purpose of hammering in
the legs. We were really pleased that we managed to get so much done
in such a short time without the day feeling at all rushed. Ian is
clearly very passionate and knowledgeable about his craft and explained
everything clearly and patiently. All in all a day well spent!
This was a surprise trip for me, no idea what I was getting myself in to. But Ian was a fabulous teacher. His knowledge and patience is fabulous even when I was being very heavy handed. This sort of wood work is far more delicate than I could have imagined.
The day made all the better by finding a kindred spirit in climbing, sharing stories of bear encounters in Yosemite and life without responsibilities. Fabulous day, can’t wait to go back and do another course.
We did this course for our 5th year anniversary (wood being the theme), and it was brilliant!
Ian was very welcoming, he was encouraging and very passionate about what he does, which was great to be a part of. We learnt traditional woodworking techniques and had the pleasure of using traditional tools throughout the day, which really made you connect with the wood and what you were creating.
Using the traditional techniques made it harder work, but so much more rewarding. We left the day feeling really proud of the bench we had made, also aching, but more importantly smiling from ear to ear over what we had achieved.
We have great memories of the day every time we sit on our new oak bench and would recommend this to anyone who wants a good day out!
I purchased my husband a course for two from Ian. I must admit I was nervous about joining him but we had the most wonderful day. Ian is a patient and calm tutor of his beloved craft. The bench is absolutely lovely and is admired by everyone who sees it. I can recommend this course 100%.
My wife gave me the bench making experience as a gift. In fact we worked together on it. Ian has everything ready and supplied some lovely oak pieces for the seat and back. We used ash for the legs and chestnut for the back supports.
We used traditional hand tools to do the shaping and smoothing. The result was super and now sits proudly in our garden.
Ian was helpful and patient.
Our arms and shoulders were aching, but we had a rewarding day and a bench that should outlive us.
What a fantastic day! I bought this for my wife as a Christmas gift, and we got to take it on a sunny Mother's Day. Ian taught us so much and gave us the skills to make a lovely bench. A full day and we definitely caught the bug--we will be back to make more in the future. Definitely recommend--you won't be disappointed!
My husband and I had the most amazing day making a beautiful garden bench. Going from chunks of wood and branches to a bench to be proud of was frankly astounding. Ian was really helpful and full of knowledge. The day was so relaxing and it was great to learn new skills. Next time we’ll come back with the kids! Thank you Ian!!
Fantastic way to spent a cold winter day. A warm fire to walk to before starting then offerings all day of hot drinks. Then comes the course. A delight for any ecoerince of woodwork or enthusiast. Starting with making a rustic wooden mallet from locally sourced ash from bradgate making it with hand tools. Then making a stool with it and the tools from wood also sourced from bradgate. Help all the way and the experience of his carpentry skills and knowledge is incredible. Reccomend for all!!!
A very enjoyable day making our garden bench. We really enjoyed visiting Ian's workshop and learning about how things were done in the past and also having a go at these techniques. Our garden seat was beautiful and we were so pleased to see how a tree trunk could be shaped into a useful item. The course was well prepared and Ian was patient and encouraging at every stage.
spent a brilliant day with Ian at his workshop being guided through the process of making from scratch a beautiful green oak garden bench, if you want to learn and soak up a little knowledge about real woodwork Ian is your man, very patient knowledgeable teacher.
Thank you for brilliant memory, Doug&Angie
