Raku pottery at Cowshed Creative in the Lake District National Park near Kendal and Windermere

Nesting bird at Cowshed Creative in the Lake District near Kendal and Windermere

About the Course

Opening 25 Aug. 2-metre distancing and smaller groups.

RAKU is a really amazing process that includes firing your own pots to create unique patterns and designs on your pieces. This course takes place across two consecutive Saturdays - the starting date is 3rd Oct. There will be special measures in place to keep everyone safe.

The first Saturday you will develop hand-building skills to create a range of pots or models. These will be dried and biscuit fired ready for you to experiment with glazes and oxides the following week. You will be amazed at the quality and quantity of pieces you can create.

On the consecutive Saturday, prepare for an exciting session working with an outdoor kiln with controlled use of fire and smoke! ‘Raku’ loosely means ‘happiness in the unexpected’. The effects you can achieve can be stunning. No prior experience needed but those with experience will have lots of opportunities to develop their skills.

Chris Barnes is a renowned professional potter from the Borders who exhibits across the UK and in Germany. He has taught both adults and young people for many years alongside his own creative practice. His teaching combines hands on practical work with demonstrations and useful expert tips.

This workshop will be at Cowshed Creative, based in a traditional converted Lakeland barn at Browfoot Farm. The art studio is a stunning open plan space with plenty of room to wander outside and take inspiration from the amazing Lakeland landscape and environment of the peaceful Kentmere valley. Make it a special break and stay on the farm. Check out our website for availability.

All our tutors are carefully selected professionals and experts with extensive teaching experience. Whilst this is a relatively new venture, George, who has set up Cowshed Creative, has many years of experience programming and running creative courses at the Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal and for Cumbria Adult Education.

An exceptional and magical experience at Cowshed Creative.
From learning how to form pinch pots to glazing, firing and smoking our Raku pieces, our tutor guided us with gentle humour and much considered kindness.
Our hosts provided a delicious lunch including pudding and cakes on both days.
The barn was warm and we could cosy up by the wood burning stove when in need of refreshments.
A wonderfully engaging course, enhanced by the idyllic setting of the Kentmere Valley... thank you Cowshed Creative.

Response from Cowshed Creative (Kentmere Farm Pods and Creative Courses):

The Raku course was such an enjoyable event. Two excellent days. Organisation was perfect as was the beautiful location. A lovely warm welcome from George on arrival. Chris was a fabulous, patient teacher and I made far more work than I expected even though I was a complete novice. The firing process was exciting and I loved the element of surprise as to how the glaze would turn out. Lunch and cakes by George both awesome. The barn was toasty warm and comfortable to work in. I wouldn't change a thing and would highly recommend taking this and any other course with Cowshed Creative.

Response from Cowshed Creative (Kentmere Farm Pods and Creative Courses):

Thanks for such great feedback Marion. I will pass on your comments to Chris. Look forward to seeing you again.

Received a friendly welcome to the beautiful and comfortable venue-great facilities.
Hadn't done any pottery before and was a bit apprehensive but the course leader flexi-ed activities to allow more experienced participants to expand tasks as he supported the various ability levels.
Glazing our pots on the second day then waiting to see how the firing affected the finished effect was exciting and absorbing.
Lunch on both days was delicious (as was the range of cake!)
Would highly recommend Cowshed Creative Raku pottery course.

Response from Cowshed Creative (Kentmere Farm Pods and Creative Courses):

Many thanks for such positive comments and hope to see you again soon.

This is the second course I’ve taken part in at Cowshed Creative & once again it was excellent.
The first Saturday was spent making pots after a great introduction to the Raku process & some examples of Raku tea bowls etc. Various techniques for hand building were shown to us & we in turn each made a few different pots to be fired.
The second Saturday we were given more of the history of Raku before then glazing & Raku firing our pots made the previous week in an outdoor kiln & dustbin of sawdust & wood chips.
It was so exciting to see the results! And the effects were really quite magical.
I can’t fault the excellent tuition, and once again the fabulous location, facilities & delicious food. Perfect.

Response from Cowshed Creative (Kentmere Farm Pods and Creative Courses):

Thanks again for such lovely feedback. Some amazing pots and an exciting day!
