This one day course is designed to give the student all the fundamental practical skills needed to paint and upcycle furniture to a professional level. This along with the added woodcare knowledge will allow the students to sympathetically restore any piece of furniture whether it’s with paint or naturally.
The student will bring a relatively small piece of furniture to work on which will go through my very own professional process. Acrylic eggshell will be used due to its quick drying times but we will discuss all types of paints in material discussions.
The course covers the following –
Health and Safety
Concept mock up on paper – including colours, design, materials needed
Stripping, neutralising and sanding/woodcare techniques
Stain blocking, priming, knotting and undercoating
Painting, rolling and cutting back techniques
Finishes – waxes, varnishes, stains, oils, polishes
Hardware discussion (student to bring hardware if needed)
Staging and photography
The course is designed for groups of 1 or 2 so to maximise the students learning and for the items of furniture to be finished before the course ends.
If you wanted a bespoke package then we can mix and match to make sure you gain everything you need from the workshop.
Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 2 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.
All power tools/hand tools, abrasives, masking, stain blocking and primers, brushes and wood finishes provided. Top coat paint choice and furniture to be provided by the student.
7 hours (9:30am to 4:30pm)

Painted Furniture & Upcycling with Woodcare - 1 Day Beginners
I attended this course with Ollie after having never done anything like this before.
You are taught, then left to carry on, then guided again and helped all through the day in a really kind way so that you are actually learning skills that you can easily take away with you.
The day was friendly, fun, very interesting and achievable and I came away with my own piece of furniture that I had painted myself, that ended up exactly how I had hoped it would look.
My only add in would be I think Ollie should sell the products that you use so I could have come away with most of the things I need to paint my other bedside cupboard.
I attended a 1 day course with Ollie which was originally a French polishing course but because of the nature of the furniture I brought to work on it evolved as we went with me finishing it with a wax oil. I loved every minute of the day. I had spent ages watching YouTube clips & Googling how to refinish furniture but found the different advice overwhelming so booked the course hoping it would give me the confidence to properly get started. It really has. I learnt not only how to strip, sand & finish but what to use too which I know will save me time & money. Ollie personalised his advice to help us individually but I also felt that I learnt from other people’s experiences on the day too. Amazing! Thank you! I’ve ordered what I need & can’t wait to carry on with other pieces.
I spent 2 days with Ollie renovating an old ugly chair. By the end of the course it was transformed into a modern, usable and attractive piece of furniture. The detailed step by step instruction is invaluable. I will be booking a longer course next year as there is so many techniques to learn. Thank you Ollie!
I finished my first workshop course at OP Woodcraft on 2nd July. My teacher Ollie has a wealth of knowledge and tailored the course to fit my specific needs. I wanted a hands-on class that would teach me the best ways to strip, prime, paint and finish my MCM furniture. I drove away that afternoon knowing how to work with the recommended products and what equipment I should be using to get the best results. I now have more confidence to start working on my collection. Thank you, Ollie, for sharing your knowledge with me.
I spent two enjoyable days attending a furniture painting course with Ollie and found it very professional and informative. He was very patient and has given me the confidence to continue with upcyling my existing furniture. This course is very good value for money.
Did a one day furniture painting course and it was fantastic. Far superior to anything else you'll find this course is incredibly informative and I learnt absolutely loads. Ollie is passionate and knowledgeable and made it a very enjoyable day.
Although the cost may seem high it really is worth the price and you achieve a good finish. I would happily return for the french polishing course and recommend to all my friends.
As someone new to wood finishing and not sure where to begin, I contacted Jay Blade from Jay and Co asking him for some tips on how to get started. Jay highly recommended Ollie from OP Woodcraft. I contacted Ollie and completed the two-day French polishing course with him at his workshop, which I found extremely valuable. Over the two-days I learnt how to remove existing finishes from wood, how to prepare wood to get a flawless finish and then moved on to work through the different stages of french polishing. We went through different techniques on how to stain, grain fill, french polish and finish wood to achieve a high quality gloss and matt finish. I also learnt painting techniques that showed me how to get a high quality factory finish using a brush. Overall the course was excellent. Ollie expertly explained different techniques and also gave me a list of materials to purchase along with details of suppliers. I would recomend this course to anyone wanting to get started in wood finishing techniques. I would also recommend that you take along a small piece of furniture that you would like to work on and you will be amazed at the stunning results that can be achieved.
I spent two very interesting and informative days with Ollie for a French polishing workshop. He is very patient and the atmosphere is both relaxed and industrious. He was very generous with his time and his knowledge, and I have contacted him since to ask his advice. Ollie clearly loves what he does and I felt lucky to be learning so much from him. I am sure I shall return to learn more.
French polishing & wood care course. I took my own piece of furniture to work on. Felt very welcome & comfortable in Ollie's workshop. We worked way over the planned times to which I am very grateful. Ollie is very patient, generous with his knowledge & time. I have learnt loads, have a shopping list of tools & materials I need. Have workshop envy!!!!!
This course is a superb introduction into woodcare and furniture upcycling. Ollie will show you how to take a piece of furniture that's very much an 'ugly duckling' and turn it into a swan!
Ollie is passionate about wood. His two day course was packed full of detailed information and tips to up cycle old furniture. The take away contact and hints sheets were particularly useful after the event as there are so many skills to take on board over two days. His kind, calm, unassuming manner makes you feel less of a novice from the start. He takes time to talk through your ideas and will demonstrate different techniques whilst your working piece is drying. He has exacting skills, and enjoys modern design as well as treasuring the history of cherished furniture. I would willingly spend time under his tutorage again as his knowledge is vast and his stress free way of working suited me well. Thank you.
