I thoroughly enjoyed the French Polishing workshop with Ollie which I recently attended. Ollie is extremely patient and has a huge amounts of experience and knowledge of working with different types of furniture from various periods. His knowledge of wood and materials is vast and he is great at explaining different techniques. The course is really practical and it was great to be able to get hands on so quickly and develop the skills and confidence to be able to continue to do more restoration projects in the future. I look forward to going back, learning more techniques with even bigger and better projects..!
Ollie is a great teacher with knowledge and passion. There was a calm efficiency about the course which is almost entirely hands on. Ollie has a knack of knowing when to gently intervene and instruct.
I learnt far more on the 5 day course than I imagined I would. I am no expert, but I feel confident and capable of tackling a wide range of tasks. I also know that Ollie would be happy to provide ad hoc advice if I needed it.
The course notes are excellent as well as the refined shopping list for future projects that followed.
Thank you Ollie!
This is an excelkent course run by Oliver who is very informative, knowledgeable and patient. I have vastly improved my technique in staining and oiling, have learnt that I love the process of French polishing and that I need more practice in my furniture painting. However, I have gained the knowledge to take these forward and know that Ollie is at the end of an email for future advice. I would highly recomnend this course and would love the chance to attend another one in the future.
My partner Rhys and I run a small business selling vintage and antique furniture. We both attended the week long course and we were blown away by the amount we learned during our time with Ollie. We're now more than confident that we can tackle anything that comes our way and this will help our business tremendously.
Ollie is a fantastic teacher, explains everything with great care and patience and is very easy to get on with. Thank you so much Ollie!

I have just completed the 5 day course, split over 3 weeks due to Covid. This actually worked for me really well rather than all in one week. The first couple of days are quite hard work physically. I managed to restore a mid century sideboard back to it's former glory, french polish a small table and learned how to quickly bring back the sparkle into a piece of furniture. Ollie has provided me with instructions and a shopping list after the course so I can get set up at home.
I recently returned to OP Woodcraft for a five day workshop with Ollie, having completed a 2 day workshop in summer 2020. Once again it was a brilliant course and I thoroughly enjoyed the five days. I completed two pieces - a French polished sewing box and a restored contemporary chair. Ollie's instructions and guidance are clear and helpful and I came away very happy with the restored pieces. It's a good way to spend a few days working hard and a great distraction from all the current world events!
I've recently completed my second 5 day Professional French Polishing & Contemporary Woodcare Workshop with Ollie at OP Woodcraft. Ollie has been absolutely fantastic in passing on his knowledge, showing me his skills and teaching me about different techniques and wood finishes. I was impressed with how much I achieved during my ten days with Ollie, I really didn't expect to get so much done!. Altogether I worked on eight pieces that were refinished in various ways such as French polishing, waxing and oiling, and I've also learnt various techniques such as stripping, hole filling, grain filling, staining, sealing, cutting back, mopping, touching in and rubbering. Ollie's been incredibly patient with all of my questions, he's given me valuable advice about setting up my own wood care business and also about the different products and tools required for the trade. I can't thank him enough! Without a doubt I can highly recommend doing a course with OP Woodcraft. Thank you Ollie!
Had a great 5 days attending the French polishing course with Ollie. The course focuses on different wood finishes with a view to re invigorate old furniture and bringing them back to life. Ollie's knowledge was exceptional, and his approach meant that the course was relaxed and enjoyable.
Information supplied with the course was very good and with 3 different pieces to work on various different finishings were discussed and Ollie's experience in the subject meant that he had answers to any problem that was presented. A very good course well worth attending if you are interested in keeping old furniture alive.
I have recently completed both the Contemporary Furniture and Woodcare and French Polishing courses at OP Woodcraft.
I have learned how to finish and refurbish old, new and damaged furniture using a variety of techniques including oiling, staining, french polishing, painting and more, bringing it back to life.
I found the courses enjoyable and informative and they are well delivered by Oliver with clear explanations and demonstrations. Oliver provides course notes and is very helpful in answering any questions you have post course.
I would recommend these courses for pleasure or business, they provide you with skills for life and the enjoyment of creation.
Oliver has provided me the confidence in my skills to develop my own workshop and begin my own business going forward.
I have gone on to complete the professional course with Oliver which provided me with further knowledge and skills to enable me to progress my business.
I had a fantastic week in September 2019 learning how to strip, prep, paint, wax, oil, stain and French polish two pieces I brought with me.
I hadn’t done anything like this for about 12 years and these processes were new to me so I had lots to learn.
Ollie is really nice and friendly and took me through all the steps I needed to do, and was always on hand to answer questions, share his knowledge and offer support where needed.
Ollie knows a great deal about how to get the best finish and also shares which are the best products to use. It was so worthwhile doing the course and I know I could drop Ollie a message if I ever had questions in the future though his course notes are brill and I made sure to make notes and take pictures as I went along.
It was totally the best thing I did for myself all year and I’ve told quite a ew people at work about it :)
The workshop is really calm and light and in a lovely location.
I really couldn’t recommend it enough.
Oliver is a very dedicated and knowledgable professional with whom I had the pleasure to work and train for a whole week in July 2019. I highly recommend this course to professionally trained furniture conservators like myself as this insight into the craft sheds light onto the manufacturing process of wood polishing. I felt extremely welcome and Oliver was very keen to share his knowledge and experience with his students.
I found this course really beneficial after having done the two day intensive course. Ollie really does pay great attention and give good support for this 5 day course.
I took three complicated pieces of furniture all with different needs with me and we got them all done. I took notes but there are also good course notes to compare with and it’s great to get to know different products in the market and what to use. I remain in contact with Ollie now to get his advice and thoughts on different pieces I’m working on.
If you’ve got interest in restoring furniture and french polishing and using the skills you acquire on a regular basis I would recommend this five day course.
I was a total novice to re-finishing furniture (except for painting); I had many pieces that needed attention and I was too frightened to just 'have a go'. I decided it was time to acquire some skills...so booked up with Ollie for 5 days. For me, it was definitely worth it. I'd brought 6 pieces with me (including a pine breakfast bar and an Ercol chair) and we managed to work on four of them. I feel much more confident about oiling/waxing pieces; painting (including masking-up furniture for painting patterns) and even french polishing. Ollie is friendly, approachable and patient and has a nice, big, bright workshop to work in. Ollie provides plenty of information about products to use and since there were only a few in the class, I got lots of attention, which is what I think I needed to really embed what I was learning....and now I have 3 more Ercol chairs to strip and re-finish....
