One day slab-building clay workshop

About the Course

Course themes vary. Make and decorate your own clay platter / vase / house plaque. You will use use the traditional hand-building 'slabbing' technique and experiment with decorative surfaces using sgrafitto stamping, imprinting and stencilling techniques.

Half-day children and family workshops also available upon demand.

Working in an informal studio environment, above an antique furniture restorer, local artist-teacher Louise Gridley will guide you through the making and decoration processes using clay. Make your ceramic outcome for yourself or as a personalised gift. Workshops are suitable for all abilities.

All ceramic ware is bisque fired and glazed with a clear glaze to enhance the beauty of the colours used. Fired outcomes can be picked up from the studio at a later date by prior arrangement. Alternatively, postal service is available at a small, additional cost.

Louise has been teaching Art since 2001; she is a practicing artist who loves to engage her local community through the arts. She has experience of teaching art to all ages and abilities through her work in the primary, secondary and further education sectors. She is passionate about the arts and loves engaging others through her energetic, fun teaching approach.

Louise ran a superb workshop for Suffolk Wildlife Trust at our Redgrave & Lopham Fen nature reserve this month. Louise beautifully guided people to create the most fabulous selection of nature-inspired ceramic plates. Everyone had a brilliant day and produced some inspiring designs, which I believe everyone was pleasantly surprised with having made in just one day. Louise had organised everything perfectly and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Thank you.

What a great way to spend a day - Louise ran a surface decoration workshop which was enjoyable and informative. She freely shared tips and methods and I now feel inspired and equipped to take on some creative projects of my own.

Had a wonderful day with a talented artist and teacher. Learnt a lot in one day about surface decoration that is going to feed into my ceramics work. Met lovely people with shared enthusiasm. Highly recommended! Cant wait to work with Louise again.

Response from Sugi Ceramics:

Thanks Bob for hosting the workshop. It was lovely to be at your workshop again and work with yourself, Joe and your lovely students. I feel really excited about how their surfaces will develop as a result! I look forward to hosting your Pal Tiya workshop in Suffolk soon. (Great cuppa tea!!)

I had the most enjoyable 'clay day' today at the Sugi Ceramics workshop, Elmswell, hosted by proprietor and most talented artist Louise Gridley. I found the experience to be both therapeutic and relaxing, whilst allowing me to be present and focussed. I created a beautiful name plaque for my home titled, 'Spiritus', which is the Greek word meaning, 'Breath of Life'. It did me the world of good to get out of my comfort zone, and to be in a creative space, something I would encourage anybody to do.
Sugi Ceramics comes highly recommended to people of all ages and abilities.

In gratitude,

Emily Ford

I attended a course in late 2018 and was thoroughly impressed with the course and Louise at Sugi. I made a house number plaque and two plates for family members during the day. Louise was very supportive (I last did some clay work in the 80s when I was at school!) and her enthusiasm shone through. I hope to go again in the future.

Response from Sugi Ceramics:

Thanks Rich! I'm pleased that you did not find the experience too daunting having not worked in this medium since school in the 80's! You were a natural. Hope to work with you again some time :)
