About the Course
On this bespoke 4 day course, silversmith Bryony Knox will show you how to design and make your own Arts & Crafts inspired copper clock.
This is an ideal introduction to various metalwork techniques whilst making your own beautiful object to love and treasure.
This course will run over 4 days from 10-5pm each day. Beginners - Advanced
Bryony will explain the way to design and make a free standing clock using techniques popular amongst Arts & Crafts such as riveting, piercing and the ancient art of chasing & repousse- where sheet metal is formed and embossed using small steel tools, whilst held in pine pitch.
A simpler, slightly smaller version of the acorn clock shown above can be made (approx 20 x 16 x 9 cm) and you will be able to personalise your version by changing the imagery on the clock face and side panels.
The class will be no larger than 4-6 people and held in Bryony's own colourful and eclectic workshop at Coburg House Studios in Leith, Edinburgh.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
Templates will be provided with room to personalise your design. The price includes copper, use of tools and a quartz clock mechanism.
You will be provided with tea, coffee and pastries for each workshop and Bryony will point you in the direction of some great local Leith Delis and Coffee shops where you can pick up lunch.
I first came across Bryony and her work on the 'Arts and Crafts House' - I hankered after the clock when I saw it on TV. An internet search brought me to her website, and the fact that she was running a course to make a clock from copper. I was a bit worried about booking the course, as I had not done any metalwork before, except bending wire with pliers. It was also a long way to travel, as I live in London.
I was so pleased I did it - the studio location was a feast for the eyes, and Bryony was both knowledgeable and patient. She has an intuitive knack of knowing when to offer to step in, and offer assistance (like when I got frustrated cutting curves in copper sheet). I would highly recommend Bryony's teaching to others. I came away from the course with a fully complete, and working clock.

A thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding week where not only do you learn new skills, you also get a special piece to take home at the end of it! Never having done this before, I was surprised that this could all be achieved during this short course! Bryony is a gifted maker and her intuitive and relaxed teaching style makes this course a special experience. Melville (arts & crafts clock course student).

I thoroughly enjoyed this course, throughout the week Bryony was encouraging and patient, always able to give pointers to improve your skills or overcome any problems. The small class size enabled Bryony to give individual attention when required and as she is an extremely knowledgeable tutor it made for a relaxed but very informative atmosphere.
The course is full-on but with everything required being supplied from tools and materials to encouragement and excellent tuition it is well worth the effort and at the end of it you have a one-of-a-kind clock to show for your efforts.
