Description

One day workshop were you will learn to mould and cast your own Bronze Age replica sword. The day starts with an intro into bronze casting methodology and a safety talk. Then we will look at preparation for moulding and mould making. After preparation of the furnace this will be fired to heat, metal prepared and the crucible filled. A demonstration pour will ensure everyone is familiar with the safest way to proceed. Then we will prepare moulds and look at common problems and how to avoid them. This usually takes us into lunch time. After lunch the furnace will be fired again and each participant will take part in their own sword being cast. Most of the remaining time will be taken with hand finishing the casts - fettling, grinding, as time allows. Future dates will be added for you to come back and fit a wooden handle and fully finish your sword. The bulk of the day will be spent outdoors so please dress warmly and wear full length trousers (jeans) solid footwear and a thick coat. All safety gear will be provided - gloves, apron, face shield, etc. This workshop assumes some practical knowledge and ability, the use of tools, including power tools. The workshop location is in my studio in NW London and there is on-street parking. Workshops are weather dependent so in the case of postponement a minimum 24hrs notice will be given. If new date is not to your liking then a full refund will be given. These workshops are limited to max three participants for safety and because there is no space for more! 10.00 - 15.30 with tea breaks and a lunch break. Coffee and tea provided, and there may be cake. It is a diary free household so soya or oatmilk. Please bring your own lunch. We have a microwave.
