About the Course
Original type, beautiful papers and a vintage press! Create a design using hand-set type and produce your own limited edition prints. A fascinating introduction to the art of typography and the workings of a table top press.
Chris will touch on the 500 year history of the craft as he talks students through basic letterpress principles and demonstrates the Adana press in action.
You will learn to hand-set type on a composing stick, transfer to a chase and lock it up for printing. After lunch you will ink up and operate the press to print your own artworks.
Students are encouraged to come prepared with an idea (approx. 50-100 words, 8 x 5 inch print area). Potential ideas include personalised greetings cards, mini posters and art prints. The Smallprint Co’s mobile library of specialist books offers plenty of inspiration.
Open to both beginners and those with experience.
Tutors: Chris Barker/Hannah Barker
Chris and Hannah Barker met at art college back in the 90s, discovering in each other a mutual love of print and a burning ambition to run a print studio.
Their combined experience in the print and publishing industry led to the founding of The Smallprint Company in Derby in 2014. They offer an inventive, tailor made approach to seductive letterpress print.
