About the Course
Come and spend some time developing your painting skills in a relaxing, supportive environment. Workshops are open to all and being small groups only, are individually tailored to ability. All workshops are run by myself, I've taught art for over 25 years as well as creating my own work, and take place in my studio or in the surrounding beautiful Yorkshire Dales.
A weekend spent drawing in the landscape and developing paintings in the studio.
You will have the opportunity to use Wallace Seymour ancient drawing materials (stones and crushed earth pigment) to begin your drawing sessions and loosen you up to look for the different layers in the landscape, moving on to developing a few small oil & cold wax paintings on paper. Some of the weekend will be spent outdoors where you are more able to capture the atmosphere, but that is weather dependent!
You will be shown different application techniques and tools, building up layers of textures using oil paint and cold wax medium or coloured glazes to create effects in your work.
Horton in Ribblesdale is on the Settle-Carlisle line so possible by public transport. The workshop is family friendly (over 14) and my studio has wheelchair access, although easily accessible the toilet is up a gravel drive. Please state if mobility assistance will be needed.

An excellent day. Penny had prepared well for the class and we were able to experiment with a wide range of materials with help and support to develop and explore our individual style. The catering was good and we were made to feel welcome. I would recommend this course to anyone, complete beginners such as me as well as more proficient artists, as the tuition was geared to us individually.

With very little painting experience since school I was pretty unsure what Id let myself in for, but loved it! Penny was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable and really helped me feel confident. We went out and painted around the studio, heading up a little track to get good views. We worked with different textures, building areas of texture into backgrounds before we left the studio so that we were much more experimental and didn't get too fussy.
It was a lovely day and has really inspired me to paint more! Thoroughly recommend!

I recently attended the "Landscape Painting With Oils " workshop with Penny Hunt, in Horton in Ribblesdale, which I thoroughly enjoyed. It was so interesting and inspiring to talk to Penny about her work and the techniques she uses and then put some of these techniques into action. . Though the weather was not great, we had an active day preparing materials before we left the studio and then getting outdoors to loosen up with sketches of the landscape in charcoal, chalk and ancient stone. We returned to the studio, having soaked up the atmosphere of the outdoors and with our sketches in mind, to paint with oils. Later in the day we took paint, boards and necessary materials outside to paint "en plein air" only returning for a little more work in the studio once the rain started again.
I was excited by the workshop and can't wait to try out some of the ideas at home. I wanted to loosen up a little in my own painting and not be quite so bound by the actual. I wanted to explore a slightly more ethereal /abstract approach and I felt that Penny addressed what I wanted and gave me ideas. I would recommend this worksop and I am sure I will be returning for more in the future.
