Outside Workshop: Get started with DSLR creative photography(Beginners level)

DSLR photography workshop course beginners Somerset and Dorset

Taught outside, or indoors with outdoor practice if the weather is less favourable.

Taught by a professional photographer with almost 20 years of working experience, this is a practical workshop day packed with information about starting and improving your DSLR photography but designed to cut through the jargon to show you exactly what you need to do to be able to start taking the creative photos which you envisage.

Time: Arrive for 10am start - workshop will finish for 4pm.

We will be looking at the technical aspects of the DSLR camera, such as settings and functions but will also be looking at how we can be creative with our photographic skills.

We will be be discussing the fundamentals of composition, depth of field, aperture, shutter speed and ISO features but, perhaps more importantly, we will be breaking the day up with regular practical photography sessions which we will then review.

Maximum number on workshop is 4 people. This class is suitable for adults only please.

We will look at the fundamentals of photography in detail - light, composition and subject - and will also touch on a wide range of topics such as using natural light, lenses and other equipment, landscape photography, action photos, close up and macro images, black and white photography, storing and organisation of image files... and more!

The workshop tuition, advice and guidance given by Sally on the day form the basis for this workshop.

You will need to bring your camera, lens(es), memory card, fully charged battery and either a spare battery or your charger, sturdy bag to carry your camera kit, outdoor wear appropriate for the weather, plus your lunch and snacks with a flask for hot drinks or a water bottle.

Access to toilets available at the workshop.

* 4 People max for Workshops
* 1 person per 6ft (185cm) table (so you can work spaced out from other workshop attendees)
* Well ventilated, clean Workshop (as ever!)
* Hand Sanitiser (please continue to use it frequently)
* Separate Toilet Facilities for just our Workshop (so you know who you could have been in contact with and to minimise contact with general public)

We encourage everyone to continue to respect other people's space.

You are very welcome to wear a mask or face covering at any time during your visit to the Workshop (there is absolutely no need to feel uncomfortable about wanting to wear a facemask) but you are not required to wear a facemask while you are crafting in your workspace.

Please still bring a mask with you to wear in the general shared spaces such as the toilet area and corridor to the Workshop (this may change in due course so please check your reminder email sent out the week before your Workshop date).

If you have any concerns or questions about attending Workshops with the restrictions lifted, please let me know and we will work together to make sure that you are confident that you can craft safely in the Workshop.

Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 2 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.

What's included in the price?

The workshop tuition, advice and guidance given by Sally on the day form the basis for this workshop.

You will need a DSLR camera or micro 2/3rds camera. Rule of thumb is that if you have interchangeable lenses then this is a workshop which is suitable for you - contact me before booking if you have a bridge camera and we will look at suitability.

Hot and cold drinks are available to top up at the workshop.

Thank you so much Sally, the course was excellent. We learnt such a lot from you and technical stuff was explained in an easy to understand way and no question was too daft to ask! I am looking forward to building on the skills you have given me and gaining in confidence with using my camera more creatively. It was great to spend the day with such a lovely group of ladies too. Thank you once again.

Thank you so much Sally for such an informative and enjoyable day. I learnt so much in a short space of time and am looking forward to practising all the different aspects we covered! The venue was perfect and our group of 4 enabled social distancing as well as being an ideal size to maximise our learning opportunities. All the best Sally and I hope to see you on another course soon!

I thoroughly enjoyed this beginners photography workshop. Our tutor, Sally, was very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Nothing was too much trouble. I came away enthusiastic to get started taking better photographs 'in real life' It was a small group (3) which made social distancing easier in this small but wonderfully appointed and accessible venue. I look forward to returning to further my learning in this and other subjects.

Having owned DSLR cameras for over 15 years I figured it was time to get off Auto settings! This course was fantastic. Sally not only gave us the technical know how but more importantly the practical reasons to use the different settings on the cameras. I would highly recommend this course and Sally.

I can't thank Sally for this course enough, it opened my eyes to what I am able to achieve with my camera. A well balanced course, both informal yet professional with easy steps to help you get to grips with the technology you're learning. Beautiful venue and a fantastic price!
Ready for the next level! X

This course helped me to understand my camera more and use it more confidently and creatively. Sally is very knowledgable and has time to ensure everyone is learning about their own camera. The venue is great for creativity and the ambience Sally creates is relaxed and friendly. I would definitely recommend this course

Absolutely brilliant day, I would highly recommend to beginners. Set at a great venue with lots of interesting subject matter to photograph. Sally was informal and makes you feel relaxed as soon as you arrive. Great balance of technical vs practical throughout the day. I came away feeling inspired and can already see a difference in my photographs.

Fabulous day spent learning not only about my camera (without all the confusing technical terms) but about how to achieve a great photograph using the technology within the camera.
Nice small group and very relaxed. Sally is very patient and a great teacher. I would highly recommend this one day course, it's excellent for the beginner and for those with a little knowledge

Alison Martin - - #17732

This was a relaxed group, there was a lot to take in, in a short time, sally made it easy to understand all the camera functions and didn’t mind going back over things. I feel I gained confidence in my ability to use my camera to its best.
I would recommend this course to complete beginners or someone who has a little knowledge but wants to learn more about composition, light etc
