Covid19 update: offering over 100+ courses in Cumbria & the Lakes, we hope to resume all 'in person' courses in late July 2020. During lock down, we've upgraded a listed barn into a beautiful spacious workshop studio, enabling courses to take place with 2m distancing, hand washing and two staircases. It's possible usual catered lunches may not be included for summer courses, depending on circumstances at the time.
About the workshop:
Come and enjoy experimenting with the ancient Japanese technique of glazing and firing raku. Exciting and fast moving – raku is irresistible and highly in vogue at present. Raku firing is unique and one of the most dramatic and exciting ways to fire pottery. It was developed in Japan in the 16th century for the Japanese tea ceremony.
Tutor Dave Norman arrives with his kiln and all equipment necessary for this outdoor day of working with heat, sawdust, fire and smoky bins! The class takes place outside and during the day students might manage to make around 6 to 8 raku pieces.
This course is suitable for beginners, i.e. those with no experience of pottery.
We have been hosting and organising 'Quirky Workshops' since 2005 from our friendly family run Tea Garden on the northern fringes of the Lake District. All our tutors are carefully hand selected experts and professionals and many considered as leading nationally in their field.
If you will be redeeming a CraftCourses gift voucher on this course, the voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
Welcome drinks : fresh coffee & home made biscuits, a lovely 2 course Aga lunch served in our farmhouse kitchen or outside in the Tea Garden as soon as it's warm enough. To finish off the day, a freshly made Cream Tea (including Aga-baked scones, cream and jam).
There is a £10 material cost payable to the tutor on the day for usually between 6 to 8 pieces .
Our days are considered special treats; many come back time and time again and often combine it with a short break to the Lake District.
Many of our early courses get booked up for Christmas presents.
Annie Swarbrick at Quirky Workshops at Greystoke Craft Garden and Barns
Hi Annie, Thanks for sending the photos through. We both thoroughly enjoyed the day, and lunch was lovely. My husband and son were very impressed with the pots we made, and we plan to do more courses with you in the future. Best wishes, Janice & Amy.
Brilliant course - my second time. So easy to do and yet the results are so impressive. Plus you get to take so much home. Excellent value for money. Dave is an excellent teacher. Annie's hosting is a joy as always and the food is yummy!
Just a quick message to say how much we enjoyed our two days learning Raku recently. The people, place, food and Dave's great tuition all made for a really lovely couple of days of our holiday. We are back in Cumbria again for two weeks at the beginning of August next year and hope we might be at the right time to enjoy another day (or two) with you and Dave. 5
A great day making some surprisingly lovely things! Dave was great fun, providing clear instructions and sharing his experience. He allowed us to be as hands on, or off, as we wanted, with lots of opportunities to learn & practice each stage of the process.
Annie's hospitality was wonderful, with a delicious lunch, scones, biscuits and copious amounts of tea.
