Covid19 update: during lock down, we've upgraded a listed barn into a beautiful spacious workshop studio, enabling courses to take place with 2m distancing, hand washing and two staircases.
About the workshop:
Come and enjoy experimenting with the ancient Japanese technique of glazing and firing pottery, called Raku. Exciting and fast moving – Raku is irresistible and highly in vogue at present. Raku firing is unique and one of the most dramatic and exciting ways to fire pottery. It was developed in Japan in the 16th century for the Japanese tea ceremony.
Tutor Dave Norman arrives with his kiln and all equipment necessary for this outdoor day of working with heat, sawdust, fire and smoky bins! The class takes place outside and during the day students might manage to make around 6 to 8 raku pieces.
This course is suitable for beginners, i.e. those with no experience of pottery.
We have been hosting and organising 'Quirky Workshops' since 2005 from our friendly family run Tea Garden on the northern fringes of the Lake District. All our tutors are carefully hand selected experts and professionals and many considered as leading nationally in their field.
Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 4 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.
Welcome drinks : fresh coffee & home made biscuits, a lovely 2 course Aga lunch served in our farmhouse kitchen or outside in the Tea Garden as soon as it's warm enough. To finish off the day, a freshly made Cream Tea (including Aga-baked scones, cream and jam).
There is a £15 material cost payable to the tutor on the day for usually between 6 to 8 pieces .
Our days are considered special treats; many come back time and time again and often combine it with a short break to the Lake District.
Many of our early courses get booked up for Christmas presents.

Hi Annie, Thanks for sending the photos through. We both thoroughly enjoyed the day, and lunch was lovely. My husband and son were very impressed with the pots we made, and we plan to do more courses with you in the future. Best wishes, Janice & Amy.
Thanks Annie and Dave!

Really enjoyable day - fun, learned something new and pleased with the results despite being very non-creative. Great Instruction.
Just a quick message to say how much we enjoyed our two days learning Raku recently. The people, place, food and Dave's great tuition all made for a really lovely couple of days of our holiday. We are back in Cumbria again for two weeks at the beginning of August next year and hope we might be at the right time to enjoy another day (or two) with you and Dave. 5
A great day making some surprisingly lovely things! Dave was great fun, providing clear instructions and sharing his experience. He allowed us to be as hands on, or off, as we wanted, with lots of opportunities to learn & practice each stage of the process.
Annie's hospitality was wonderful, with a delicious lunch, scones, biscuits and copious amounts of tea.
