Introduction to chasing & repousse masterclass with Bryony Knox.
Are you tempted to add this adaptable skill to your jewellery & silver smithing repertoire....Inspired by the stunning metalwork of the Glasgow Style or the Arts & Crafts Movement?
Award winning Silversmith Bryony Knox teaches the ancient art of chasing & repousse- where sheet metal is formed and embossed using small steel tools, whilst held in pine pitch.
Bryony Knox, an Edinburgh based silversmith, designs metal sculptures and silverware with a twist. For the past 20 years she has worked in many scales, metals and imagery, but movement, humour and storytelling binds all together.
Suitable for all levels and experience.
Workshop held in Bryony's colourful and eclectic studio.
Saturday: Introduction to chasing & repousse, covering the main techniques in the morning, whilst working on a figurative plaque or brooch. After lunch we will make a small set of chasing tools, and continue working on the plaque. Copper for chasing the plaque (approx 10 x 10 cm ) and tooled steel will be provided if needed.
Sunday: We will spend the day honing skills learnt on Saturday and also chasing a small copper bowl in the round. ( approx 7 cm diameter and 7 cm high)
Things you will need to bring: Copper and tooled steel are provided in the cost of the course, but if you are interested in chasing in silver then do let me know and I can buy some in for the weekend. Pitch bowls and tools are provided to use on the course.
Designs: I find that if students get the chance to think about designs before the course, then this gives them more time to play on the day! I tend to work with figurative imagery, such as animals, birds and plants, but abstract pattern and shape also work well. I suggest looking for a simple line drawing of your idea, and then we can make it more elaborate as we chase.
There would just be the four to six of you and the class would be held in my studio at Coburg Studios near the Shore in Leith. Leith is the sea port of Edinburgh and is only 15 mins by bus from Princess Street.
If you will be redeeming a CraftCourses gift voucher on this course, the voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
You do not need to bring anything along other than yourselves and maybe a wee idea of imagery which you would like to chase.
We will be working on a flat piece and then a copper bowl. I have lots of source books and tracing paper, but to save a bit of time, do mull over ideas which you could incorporate
All copper and tools are provided. If you wish to work in silver then please contact Bryony so that she can advise you on what to buy.
Tea and coffee and snacks will be provided and I will point you in the right direction to the lovely Delis in Leith for lunch!
I found the studio enchanting and very inspiring and could not wait to get started. Bryony's teaching pace is perfect, and I was surprised at how much I achieved in a day. I did not have a clue about what I wanted to work on when I arrived, but Bryony had a vast selection of material to choose from.
I would highly recommend this course to anyone interested in jewellery and or metal work, or in fact anyone looking for a very creative hobby. I am hooked!
