Bronze casting weekend

Bronze casting at New British Art

About the Course

An excellent opportunity to learn the lost wax method of bronze casting during this two day course led by experienced teacher Mark Halliday RCA. All the materials and equipment you need will be provided to enable you to make a small sculpture or object and to cast this in bronze.

You will learn:
- about different types of bronze casting techniques
- how to manipulate modelling wax and how to use other waxes in the casting process
- how to fit runners and risers (a sprue system) to your wax sculpture
- the methods and process of making ceramic shell refractory moulds
- how to burn out the wax from your mould
- about furnaces, crucibles and melting bronze
- about ways of finishing and patinating completed work
- health and safety considerations in relation to all materials and processes
- how you can start to set up your own foundry, if you wish

You will have access to:
- all the equipment you need to make a small sculpture or object in bronze to take away
- expert tuition in every aspect of the process
- our library of sculpture books
- our collection of bronze sculptures by a range of artists
- our large studio space, with communal seating areas and kitchen
- explore our 9 acres of fields, barns and woodland for inspiration

Previous participants include sculptors, jewellers, glass artists, ceramicists, blacksmiths, stonemasons, furniture makers, designers and printmakers. IT specialists, farmers, doctors, engineers, music producers, teachers, administrators, retailers - anyone who loves to experiment with an exciting process and learn new skills. Groups and children are also welcome - please contact us with any queries.
This course is suitable for all levels of experience and will also accommodate any who have previously taken part in a bronze casting course and would like to have the chance to make another bronze.

We keep numbers on each course low (usually between four to six people) so this allows everyone to get as much attention as they need to make and learn. It allows us to help you with a specific project if you have something particular in mind to make.

We've listed the next few course dates but if you're thinking of booking further ahead just contact us as we'll run the course each month. Our website shows how many places are still available on each course date. If the course you want to book is full, please contact us as there may be a waiting list and we can run another date that month.

The Tutor - Mark Halliday is an experienced artist and teacher and studied in the Foundry at the Royal College of Art. He taught at Cardiff School of Art & Design for nine years and, prior to that, at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design.
Mark was a founder of New British Art, which has its base in Carmarthenshire. New British Art is a not for profit artists' organisation that works to create new artworks, opportunities for recent graduates and provides learning opportunities at its studios in Wales and external venues by negotiation.

The Venue - Cilyrynys is a former dairy farm in a rural valley location just a few minutes' drive from the main A48 and the M4, near the National Botanic Gardens of Wales. The farm has a range of spacious outbuildings that accommodate artists' studios and workshop areas for the course.

If you want to extend your stay, the area is a great place to explore with castles, beautiful rivers, fabulous beaches and the Brecon Beacons all within an hour's drive. There are fantastic walks and mountain biking routes at Brechfa Forest, and several renowned public gardens nearby.

If you will be redeeming a CraftCourses gift voucher on this course, the voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

Mark and Caroline ran a great weekend. Booking the course was easy, and any questions and advice (accommodation etc.) were quickly handled.

Mark was very attentive, expertly explaining all of the process, and providing us tailored support to ensure we made our sculptures successfully.

Lunch and refreshments were delicious (thanks Caroline!) A great setting for the course in their picturesque workshop.

Overall a enjoyable, relaxing and creative course, which is thoroughly recommended!

A fantastic weekend and introduction to Bronze Casting.
Mark and Caroline very welcoming. Great instruction from a knowledgable and passionate artist (Mark) which resulted in the creation of pieces far beyond my expectations as a complete beginner.
We stayed in the cottage which was immaculately clean, warm and comfortable, and the generous and thoughtful breakfast supplies and logs for the wood burner were an added bonus.
Would thoroughly recommend this course. THANK YOU

This course was a fantastic introduction to working with bronze and was more than I hoped for or expected when I joined. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Mark and Caroline were exceptionally welcoming. The food was delicious and the depth of art discussion was just perfect. There were deep and meaningfuls about a whole range of art and art history. Great debate among the students on their inspirations and their pieces, and also equally friendly chatter when required. There is a wealth of books and materials to study with and the studio was an ideal place to focus when required. The course itself was geared to hands on experience with the materials during the casting process, and I was pouring molten metal within the first day!! The setting is beautiful and I hope to come back some time in better weather (I was there in January). All in all, fantastic value, a unique experience, and an inspirational way to start my year. My bronzes now have pride of place at home.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the lost wax bronze casting process with Mark and Caroline. I've attended many of their courses and I've learnt so much of this fascinating process. Mark explains the steps involved in this ancient art and is highly experienced and confident .
Caroline's lunches and snacks are delicious and I feel at home when I come to visit. I've met interesting friendly people on the courses who also have found this way of sculpting as interesting as I have.

Caroline and Mark have delivered the most outstanding course on bronze sculpturing, I could not even imagine it will be that great! Professional attitude, fully of experience and helpful in shaping ideas into art and not interrupting the thought process.
The course gave me a good understanding on the process and effort required to create beautiful art. Being in the middle of Wales is inspiring to come back and will do. I can highly recommend!

I spent an amazing day learning about and also making small bronze sculptures. I learnt many new skills and in the short time managed to finish several small objects, which turned out really well. This is bespoke tuition, with a very patient and skilled practitioner/artist. Thank you Mark and Caroline for a wonderful day, amazing hospitality and fabulous conversations! A most memorable day - I hope to be back!

This is a truly fantastic course that I would recommend to anyone - and everyone! I had no knowledge or experience of sculpture or bronze casting and yet I have come away with a horse sculpture and a Venus figure that I am very happy with. Mark is a true 'renaissance man' and a great, amusing and talented teacher. Caroline gives a warm welcome and makes lovely lunches. If you are interested in bronze, sculpture, art (or just need a creative break like I did) don't even think about it, just book!

This is the second time I have been back to learn under Mark. I will likely go again as as much as he teaches it opens new doors and new ideas so I want/need to know more.

The facilities provide a no-distraction environment with all the tools and supervision required to turn out some stunning work that anyone would be proud of. After Marks' teaching the realisation of: "I can do this" is akin to discovering opposable thumbs. It fills the student with confidence as well as an awareness to all the challenges a artist will face in the workshop.

Thanks again Mark!

This course is brilliant! I have done it twice now, have learned loads, and hope to go again soon. Mark is an extremely talented and accomplished artist in his own right as well as being a fantastically generous teacher, an expert on classical sculpture and incredibly knowledgeable about all aspects of bronze-casting and sculpture in general. He is also able to make everyone, no matter what age, experience or background, feel at home and confidant enough to learn a significant amount in a short space of time. Cilyrynys itself has the added bonus of being in lovely surroundings. All in all, it is quite a magical experience I would urge anyone who interested in making to give it a try.5

I keep returning to this beautiful corner of rural Wales (6 times) for truly inspirational weekends of creativity and alchemy. Mark shares his passion for bronze and his deep knowledge of it’s history, myths and processes, whilst providing clear instruction and unstinting help with all the practicalities of wax modeling, ceramic shell mould making and finishing the bronze sculpture.
In the midst of all this there is the drama of the bronze pour and the excitement and revelation of breaking open the moulds. The alchemy is infectious for beginners and experienced artists alike and makes for a most engaging social & creative event, which I most heartily recommend.
