Over the two days you will learn how to make your very own flat bow. Our expert instructors will guide you through the process, and you’ll walk away with a handmade bow and a great sense of achievement.

Day 1

On arrival you will be greeted by our instructor team and taken back to basecamp for an initial safety briefing. You will be shown how to safely use the tools you will be using throughout the course.

We’ll swiftly move onto tree selection, where as a group we will head out into the woods to choose an Ash tree that is the suitable age and condition to harvest. Our instructors will guide you through how to safely fell and de-limb the tree before taking it back to the ‘craft zone’, where as a team you will cleave it down into quarters. Once you have your quarter it’s then onto the bench to shave down and flatten off your stave with a drawknife.

There will be a selection of pre-made bows around the ‘craft zone’ to give you inspiration.

Once you’ve got your roughed out stave, you will then measure and sketch the rough bow shape onto the wood. Once again, you will be using a drawknife to remove material creating the initial shape.

Day2

Tuition will start promptly, as you will be eager to get on and complete you bow. Todays task is to tiller the bow, but first we must knock the bow ready to take a temporary string so that we can begin the tillering process. Tillering is where you remove fine shavings using a spokeshave and shave horse, to further shape the bow. This process allows the bow limbs to flex evenly on both sides of the handle, giving the bow the strength not to break.

Once you are happy with the bow, our instructors will move on to the process of making the string, using dacron. You will string your bow before testing how well it works. After which, our instructors will cover how best to finish off the bow and care for it.

And to end, you’ll get to tryout your own bow at our archery range.

During the course you will learn how to:

- Safely use knives and saws, including various cutting techniques
- Identify a suitable tree to use for bow making
- Fell and de-limb a tree
- Cleave a piece of wood, splitting it into quarters
- Use a drawknife and techniques need to shape your bow
- Use a spokeshave to tiller the limbs of your bow
- Make string for your bow using dacron
- Test your bow on the final day
