Ash splint basket workshop - 2 day

X

Description

Join Fazey Woodcraft for two day's of Ash Splint Basket Making.

Your tutor for the weekend will be the fantastic Michelle Mateo. Michelle is an experienced basket maker & bowl turner, and member of both The Heritage Crafts Association & The Basket Makers Association.

This two day course will see you go from 'Log to Basket'. Beginning with an Ash log, the weekend starts by pounding the ash by hand and then processing the splints yourself into the necessary pieces required. You'll then get the chance to split the splints further, as well learn knife techniques to prepare the ash for weaving.

Next begins the basket, you'll learn about basic weave, and the importance of tension. You’ll also get to understand so much more about the properties of Ash; its durability, its flexibility, strengths and weaknesses.

Learning these skills will give you the foundations needed to not only weave baskets yourself, but also how to produce materials yourself, adapt future baskets to your own designs, and a guaranteed appreciation of the mighty Ash Tree.

Ash Splint Basketry has its roots in the indigenous cultures of North America, and many of the techniques used in the making of these baskets also originate from Europe.

Due to the way Ash trees grow, pounding the logs delaminates them, enabling the harvesting of thin strips of wood. These are then worked further before being woven into baskets.

In-person course
Jake Rowland - - #35118

I had a fantastic time on the two day ash splint basketry course! The course was really chilled and relaxed, and nothing was too much trouble. It was amazing to go through the whole basket making process; from log at the start of day 1 to basket at the end of day 2. Michelle is a natural teacher and it was great being able to understand the why as well as how of the different steps in the basket making process. Jack has a real wealth of knowledge of wood, its properties, management and uses at it was awesome to be able to tap into that for the weekend. We all had a great laugh and I came away with a basket I’m really proud of.

Response from Fazey Woodcraft:

Thanks Jake!
