Be prepared to free up and let go! Capture the freshness, vivacity and colour of flowers in the garden with a variety of acrylic techniques. We will initially be looking at shape and form, starting with bold shapes and colour.
We will then explore mark-making, pattern and layering to capture the impression of a tangle of flowers & foliage. Along with selective use of collage to introduce a contrast of texture and definition, drawn marks can be added as a foil to the looseness of painting – this is definitely not a botanical painting class!
Lots of step-by-step demos & individual help.... a basic knowledge of acrylics is useful.
What to bring:
A packed lunch
Heavy watercolour paper or canvas board
Heavy cartridge paper or pad for initial studies and exercises
Clipboard or drawing board and bulldog clips if working on loose paper – we will be sketching & painting outside if the weather allows.
In case of bad weather please also bring other references to work from – photos/sketches of gardens/allotments / parks etc (ideally with a structure of some sort…. fence/trellis / shed/canes etc)
Drawing pencil, rubber, sharpener
Posca pens if you have any (or similar paint markers) – don’t buy specially
Oil pastels or artists crayons such as Neocolour - whatever you have (don’t buy specially)
Acrylic paints – primaries plus any others you have – if buying specially just buy primary colours and white… magenta or permanent rose is also useful for pink flowers
