About the Course
In 1871, John Ruskin painted his famous "Study of a Kingfisher" with dominant reference to colour.
Using this beautiful painting as a reference, on this one day workshop you will create a stunning needle felted Kingfisher using wonderfully soft and vibrantly coloured Merino wool. You will begin by learning the basic techniques of needle felting and move on to building up the body. At various stages you will paint and attach the pre sculptured clay beak and make the wire legs and feet.
There's no end to the colour combinations you can use to create the Kingfisher and everyone's take on the Kingfisher will be different. All levels of felters are welcome.
Once Ruskin beautifully wrote "The Kingfisher is a breathtakingly beautiful creature. Smaller than one might expect, a sighting of it in flight is a rare, heart stopping delight: a glistening ball of turquoise and saffron flashes in front of the eyes." You can create your very own heart stopping delight.
Hanne Crank is a local artist specialising in 3D needle felt art. Originally, from Sheffield, Hanne moved to the South Lakes to concentrate on her art and live a more fulfilling life in this beautiful part of the world.
Hanne's needle felting journey began when she saw a tiny curled up fox at a friend’s house. After discovering this animal was made out of merino wool using a single needle she knew she had to learn more and has since taught herself the craft and become completely absorbed in the therapeutic process.
Hanne is still on her needle felting journey, as she continues to create new and original pieces. Always using the Lake District scenery and its local flora and fauna as inspiration, she finds the satisfaction of seeing a unique piece coming to life in her hands truly magical and forever intriguing.
