Introduction to wood carving at Middleton Hall

In-person course
Liz - - #35262

This was a really enjoyable way to spend a weekend. The tasks are well-judged to be doable in the time, but still somewhat challenging, so you have a sense of achievement at the end, and well-structured so that by the time you get to the trickier bits, you have developed some skill with the tools.

Response from Amerton Arts Studio:

Thank you very much for the review Liz, glad you enjoyed it.

Really enjoyed this course, my first of maybe many. Geraint is an excellent teacher and showed us both in explanation and hands on how to carve wood using an amazing array of chisels. Would recommend anyone who wants to have a go at wood carving to go on this course. 10/10 for me

Response from Amerton Arts Studio:

Thank you for the positive review. We get a lot of pleasure out of seeing people progress and produce some beautiful work. It was lovely to meet you on the weekend.

Not being the most arty or crafty person, I approached this course with some trepidation. I am so pleased with what I created.

The tutors were knowledgeable, kind and patient.

The venue was in keeping with the corse and both peaceful and relaxing.

An excellent course, well worth the money.

Response from Amerton Arts Studio:

This was an excellent course held in a lovely setting with a superb teacher, Geraint. He described all the factors you need to know, checked on progress at the right times, gave help and advice when asked, and all with a warm and friendly manner. If you fancy giving this a go, no matter what your experience or expectations, I can highly recommend it. This was a gift to me by my lovely wife, and it ranks right up there!

I Really enjoyed wood carving and would definitely recommend. There was a great atmosphere with lots of other people on the course beavering away on their own projects. The only practical work I have ever done is DIY around the house so wood carving was a big step up. The instructions were easy to follow and my relief was much better than I thought possible. I left with a great sense of accomplishment and wanting to do more!!

Miranda is a marvellous teacher she can see where you go wrong and helps you in every way possible.
I would recommend her. I have never had such a good art teacher and have been going to her for years.
Even if you have not drawn from life or painted from life or even done any sculpture from life including portraits she will give you the confidence inspiration and most of all the satisfaction of what you have done.
Thank you SO much Miranda for all your help!!

Fantastic instruction! On a day course I sculpted a portrait head, I'm amazed at what I achieved in a day. Friendly group and good to spend time with like minded people of mixed abilities. Tea, coffee, biscuits and cake provided. Cafe shop facilities on site or take your own packed lunch. I can thoroughly recommend this course.

I wanted to come back to stone carving after many decades and was delighted to find the opportunity, even more delighted that Miranda was such a great teacher. She explains tools and techniques as you go along, an understanding of your stone, and encourages you to see it aesthetically. My Thursday morning group is a wonderful, friendly group, and it is inspiring to see their achievements under Miranda’s guidance. Highly recommended.
