Traditional Japanese Bookbinding

X

Description

In this workshop, we are going to explore two examples of the traditional Japanese side sewn bookbinding technique, the basic four hole binding and the more elaborate tortoiseshell binding. The side sewn bookbinding technique is using single sheets rather than folded sheets and is perfect for creating books out of your (or your children's) artwork, travel journal or to create sketchbooks. You'll also get the option to add colourful buttons and/or beads to the binding, and you'll be learning how to make your own templates for the sewing stations. This class is suitable for all levels, whether you are new to bookbinding or have got some experience and would like to try something new. All materials will be provided, but feel free to bring along any papers, ephemera, fabric, beads or buttons you might like to incorporate into your journals.
