Hand bound leather journal workshop

Handbound Journals made by Students

This hands-on workshop will teach you to make a hand bound leather journal from scratch. Starting with a large sheet of paper you'll be guided through the process of turning it into the individual pages of the journal, binding them together and adding a leather cover as well as a page marker.

You will be given the opportunity to dye vegetable tanned leather to form the cover as well as adding decoration using embossing / stamping it if you wish, creating a truly unique item to take home at the end of the day. Alternatively you can choose from a selection of ready dyed chrome tanned leather subject to current stock.

Closed toe footwear should be worn. If you wish to protect your clothing (from dye etc.) please bring a suitable apron.

(Due to Covid-19 we are aware that some students would prefer to do this workshop as either a 1-2-1 or in a family group. We can offer this workshop by prior arrangement on mutually agreed dates. Please contact us to discuss.)

Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 8 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.

What's included in the price?

The price includes tuition, use of the tools and materials including the leather, paper etc.

Hot drinks & snacks will be provided. Please bring your own lunch.

This leather bound journal was the second course I attended with Clive & Wendy. The first before Covid and the second during this pandemic. If you are thinking of attending one of their courses rest assured your health and safety are in excellent hands. All precautions were there in spades and you will feel safe but they still managed to make the whole learning process relaxed, friendly and most importantly, informative.

The course was more than just making a journal - Clive & Wendy are very knowledgable people who are passionate about using leather to make beautiful objects. Again, thank you for a wonderful, safe day out - of which I have had precious few in these trying 6 months.

Good luck for the future workshops you have scheduled.

Response from Evancliffe Leathercraft:

Thank you for this excellent review Sue. We're so pleased that you enjoyed your second workshop with us! Also great to hear that the Covid-19 measures we've had to put in place didn't distract from the experience and also made you feel safe.

Wendy and Clive are highly skilled leather workers in their own right and their enthusiasm for the craft is infectious. This was my third workshop with them. We started by discussing possible designs, after which we set to, tearing beautiful water colour paper to our chosen size. Then Wendy taught us how to join the pages into a journal, using traditional bookbinding techniques. After lunch it was time to plan, cut and dye the leather covers before final assembly.

Each stage was explained clearly and we made steady progress. I was delighted to end the day with not one but two beautiful handmade leather journals, one with stitched pages and the other loose leafed.

This was a very affordable one-to-one course, arranged at a time to suit me. If you are looking for enthusiastic and skilful tutors who will show you how to make very professional looking leather journals, this is the course for you. Thoroughly recommended..

Thought the day was really organised, very interesting and I enjoyed it very much.

Really enjoyed the day. Wendy and Clive were very welcoming and provided great tuition. The course was at the right pace and good for somebody who has relatively few leather-craft skills, but the results were very good, a beautiful leather bound, hand crafted journal. It would be really useful to have a photo-copy step by step guide to take away with you. That would be the icing on the cake! By the way, gorgeous surroundings and views from the kitchen, a very enjoyable day. Worth the journey from West Yorkshire. All the best, Helen.

The course was fantastic. The tutors were friendly, helpful, supportive and skilled. They provided everything required and maintained a sense of humour throughout the day, with bucket loads of support and advice

Well worth the money.
