About the Course
An introductory course in the basics of spoon carving
Situated In the picturesque village of Brompton Regis at the Riverside Project Woodland Workshop alongside the River Pulham in Exmoor national Park.
This course is designed for adults only, you must be 18 or older to attend – unless you’ve made a specific arrangement with me. Children are welcome and need to be accompanied with an adult.
Courses cost £80 per day per person (Not including food, see foot note at bottom). The course location details will be sent out with your booking confirmation. It is not held at Pullhams Mill as the map shows. Google Maps do not work well in our village.
Aimed at beginners or those who’ve carved before and want to improve. We’ll cover safe carving technique with axe and knife and plenty of time to practice your skills throughout the day. We will make kitchen utensils to get you into the basics of carving a butter spreader, porridge spurtle or spatula in the morning and a cooking or serving spoon in the afternoon.

All tools and wood are provided, you’re welcome to bring your own tools if you have them.

The session includes:
Tool review - an overview of the various tools available for spoon carving and similar projects and maintaining your tools.
Timber selection - what type of wood and what parts of the log are best and what to avoid.
Spoon design - the proportions and features of spoons for different uses.
Cleaving/splitting timber - use of axe and froe for reducing thickness of wood.
Safe and effective axe and knife skills - demonstration and practising numerous axe and knife techniques to enable you to shape timber.
Finishes after care of your wooden utensils.
Helpful hand-outs to keep for future reference.
Lunch can be booked at Pulham’s Mill Tea room at a cost of £10. Please notify me when booking your course that you require this option. I will forward you a menu, please advise of any special dietary requirements.

Starting with selecting a wooden log Peter teaches the art of Cleaving and shaping the raw timber through to the more delicate art of carving and whittling to produce a beautiful wooden spoon to take home.
