About the Course

Learn green woodworking skills at Orchard Barn. On this 3-day course you will construct a shave horse from scratch using traditional techniques and tools. Locally sourced green wood is used throughout.

Your tutor, Will Wall has decades of experience of teaching, bodging and working with greenwood. Small group size (6) ensures plenty of individual time with the tutor.

Learn how to make best use of equipment such as a shave horse and traditional hand tools - auger, side-axe, draw knife and plane. Make your own unique shave horse!

This course takes place in the old orchard at Orchard Barn which is an off-grid low impact centre run by volunteers in mid Suffolk. Expect to leave the 21st century behind you for the duration of your course.

If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

What's included in the price?

Tools, tea and biscuits are included, there will be a small charge of £15-40 for materials

Want to review this course?

This was a fantastic course - challenging but inspiring, and very satisfying. All participants went home with a shave horse, as per the intention, but also in my case I also took home a lot of new skills, some know how and lots of stimulus to carry on exploring green woodworking. I felt the tutor and Sarah at Orchard Barn took great care of us while allowing us to do and think for ourselves. And the setting itself is a great place to be.

This course teaches you to create your own shaving horse. In three days you collect a wide and varied amount of knowledge to work with green wood and all kinds of tools. This is also a special historical site where traditional building techniques are used to restore and rebuild. The site is run to have a low impact on the environment and has all kinds of interesting add-ons like the vegetable garden and the orchard.
It is really enjoyable to work in this environment and the course leader was extremely knowledgeable and supportive.
