This is the third course that I've completed with Jo who has taught me the skills on piercing and sawing. I thoroughly enjoyed my private tuition, and Jo is a very patient and thorough teacher who explains the reasons to each process/technique.
Anna MacCallum - - #26128
Response from Joanne Tinley Jewellery:Thank you for your kind words Anna! Your sawing came on leaps and bounds during our last session - an essential skill that will help you so much with your jewellery making! It's always a pleasure to have you with me in the studio.
I started my silversmith journey a while back and shared some very enjoyable time with Jo developing my skills initially and refining them later. In the early days Jo was very much my teacher, providing me with step by step guidance and insights into the intricacies of the art, craft and science of silversmithing. As my skill moved forward Jo became a mentor and many a puzzle was solved with some exploring of the challenges of designs that were nebular and required multiple techniques and strategies to reach the finished piece.
In some of my later sessions I would arrive with two or three gems, an idea and a day to produce something. On others Jo would have a session prepared around particular challenge like hinges. In every scenario Jo had the patience and understanding to draw out the best results. Did every idea work out? Well not entirely, some needed simplification, but we ended up with a piece at the end of every session.
Jo and I enjoyed working through new techniques, tools and challenges. In latter sessions Jo and I would approach the very difficult area of how to make a piece aesthetic and wearable. I am an engineer at heart and Jo helped me understand that battleship proportions were not always as beautiful as I perceive them. She helped me work with better proportion and make more balanced pieces.
Novice, intermediate or advance Jo will be one of the milestones in anyone's silversmith journey. I learnt a lot, shared a lot and enjoyed every second of the time that I shared with Jo as I continue my silversmith journey. Looking forward to my next challenge...
Paul Eslinger - - #26017
Response from Joanne Tinley Jewellery:Thank you for such a wonderful review Paul! It is an absolutely pleasure to teach you and help you on your silversmithing journey - and I enjoy the challenges you bring to the studio! Looking forward to having your company in the studio again.
Joanne is an amazing teacher, she was very patient and thorough. Coming away after just one day I felt so confident with a new style of stone setting. She went above and beyond to teach me and show me as much as possible in the short time we had together. I'll definitely be coming back for more!
Dani - - #25654
Response from Joanne Tinley Jewellery:Thank you for coming over to the studios Dani - it was lovely spending the day with you and you made great progress with your stone setting! You are most welcome back anytime!
Private tuition with Jo has been one of the best skills investments I have made, in terms of both time and money. Jo has the ability to meet her students at the level they are at, which greatly helped me build foundational knowledge as well as as more advanced skills.
As for workshops - Jo's sawing masterclass was an eye-opener for me.
Would definitely recommend either workshops or private tuition with Jo - either option is a day well spent!
Brenda - - #25644
Response from Joanne Tinley Jewellery:Thank you for such a lovely review Brenda! It is always great to have you in the studio, and a privilege to have helped you develop your jewellery making skills!
I contacted Jo for private tuition as I wanted to learn stone setting and I am so glad I did. Jo is the most wonderful, patient teacher who seems to know everything, and is great at quick mistake-fixing! I'll be coming back to learn some more techniques as I am so so happy with the output from my day.
Helen - - #25583
Response from Joanne Tinley Jewellery:Thank you for your lovely review Helen. The stone set pendant you made was gorgeous! You're welcome back any time!
My sister and me booked a private lesson with Jo and both wanted to make different things. She was very accomodating with this request and we both felt well instructed. She is a knowledgeable silversmith and accomplished teacher. I would love to live nearer so I could do more lessons with her. Could not recommend her classes highly enough.
Alison Baxter - - #25502
Response from Joanne Tinley Jewellery:Thank you Alison! I really enjoyed having you and Amanda in the studio, helping you to create your new jewellery!
I'm a self taught silversmith, who has progressed from wirework into torch work. I did a simple evening class, and then tried to learn as much as I could from online classes and books. And of course trial and error - lots and lots of error. I found Joanne's classes online and then discovered she runs workshops, including bespoke individual tuition. I booked a couple of days, train tickets and a hotel and sent her a list of what I wanted to cover. It was a vast list.
Joanne is incredibly patient and has the best teaching style I have ever come across my whole life, in any topic or medium. Every process was explained as we went through it, concisely, clearly and as though it were a perfect stream of consciousness - pre-empting all my questions (you have no idea how rare this is for me). My vast list was covered, fully throughout the course and at no point did I feel in the least stupid. I'm now able to tackle almost any task I want and more importantly, I have the confidence to try and not worry about failure because I know now how to learn meaningfully from these, much rarer errors. I can set stones like a pro, recycle my scrap, saw well, with fewer broken blades and I also got to test out a whole range of tools to help me choose my own. I cannot recommend Joanne's jewellery tuition highly enough. I only wish I lived within a commutable distance.
Dawn - - #25499
Response from Joanne Tinley Jewellery:Thank you for your very kind words Dawn! It was lovely to have you with me in the studio for a couple of days, and to teach someone so enthusiastic and keen to learn. It has been great to continue to see the jewellery you share online develop and your skills expand!
