Description

This 5 week pottery course, taught by Kelly Ottesen, will explore creating handbuilt ceramic forms and different ways to apply decorative finishes. What can you learn? You can learn how to create simple ceramic forms using a variety of hand-building methods, including tiles, pinch pots, coils, and slab work. You will then have the opportunity to explore surface finishes using glazes, slips, texture, carving and oxides. What can you make? You can expect to make at least 3 finished projects and plenty of test pieces in the form of small pots and tiles. Each block of 5 weeks will focus on a different skill that you can develop each week. What tools/equipment can you use? You can expect to use rolling pins, clay tools, carving tools and knives. A variety of glazes, oxides and coloured slips to decorate. There will be mark-making materials to create texture. Please note that this is a hand-building course only. What is the course structure? The course is structured over the 5 weeks to allow for at least 3 making weeks at the beginning followed by 2 glazing weeks to finish. This allows for the development of a skill over the 5 weeks. What is the recommended level of experience? This is an experimental course suitable for all levels. You will be guided if necessary and projects provided. A willingness to play and be curious is essential.
