Jewellery Course – Intermediate & Advanced Silversmithing

X

Description

This 5 week silversmithing course, led by Sharon Justice, provides support to jewellery makers with some experience and to those with more advanced ability, so they can develop ideas and designs, with help to translate these ideas using various techniques, into finished pieces. What can you learn? There will be opportunity to continue to develop basic skills and explore more diverse techniques such as surface treatments, metal forming, setting, cold connections, finishing and patinas, more advanced findings, and mechanisms. What can you make? This will depend on your ambition and experience level. Projects can be set or student-led. Techniques learned can be developed into individual personal designs, allowing for samples to be made as well as developing ideas for finished pieces of jewellery. What tools/equipment can you use? Metal jewellery making requires the use of open flame, either from our specially-fitted mouthblown torches or from handheld gas canisters. The purpose-built jewellery workshop has a comprehensive range of tools from hand tools, pliers, files, hammers through to drills, rolling mills, formers, polishers, and various soldering equipment. Students are welcome to bring in their own hand tools. There is always a possibility we may not have a specific tool, but we will always try to accommodate a technique where possible. What is the course structure? The 5 week course will open with an overview of what the students of mixed levels are hoping to achieve through a group discussion. This will allow for the identification of group and individual needs. Time will be spent with each student on designs and what is needed to produce an outcome. Techniques and processes will be demonstrated for individuals or as a group activity. Samples produced can be just experimental or made as completed jewellery. What is the recommended level of experience? Ideally this course level is for students who have experience of basic techniques, sawing, soldering, finishing and who have the confidence that with support they can develop further skills and develop their own ideas and designs. If you are a beginner, we recommend enrolling on the Introduction to Jewellery course.
