We have now re-opened with 2-metre distancing and smaller groups.
Portraiture: A fantastic opportunity to create a portrait of some one special. During this workshop you will explore some different methods of using photographs as source material for portraits, culminating in a final portrait of a loved one or a fellow course member. Any media can be used for your final portrait and expert advice and individual guidance will be given throughout.
Catherine MacDiarmid is a local artist who has exhibited widely, including exhibiting in the BP Portrait award for young artists in 2001/2. She is an elected member of The Lakes Artists Society and appeared in Sky Portrait Artists of the Year 2014, 2018 and 2019. As well as completing private portrait commissions her work is collected internationally, and she works from her home based studio in Kendal. Her art work focuses on the human form, exploring expression and movement in both drawing & painting. She is an inspiring teacher and her students really develop their skills under her guidance.
This workshop will be at Cowshed Creative, based in a traditional converted Lakeland barn at Browfoot Farm. The art studio is a stunning open plan space with plenty of room to wander outside and take inspiration from the amazing Lakeland landscape and environment of the peaceful Kentmere valley. Make it a special break and stay on the farm.
All our tutors are carefully selected professionals and experts with extensive teaching experience. Whilst this is a relatively new venture, George, who has set up Cowshed Creative, has many years of experience programming and running creative courses at the Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal and for Cumbria Adult Education.

The workshop fee is £70 and includes some great tuition, a stunning venue and a tasty 2 course lunch with home baked bread, cake and refreshments throughout the day. We like to finish the day with a cup of tea and slice of cake. Eat outside or enjoy lunch by the wood burner.
There is no additional material fee but students are expected to bring their own art materials.

We were blessed with a lovely sunny day for the course and the venue looked spectacular in its remote setting. The measures taken for COVID avoidance were very good and I felt that it was a safe setting for the course. Catherine is a very accomplished and knowledgable local artist. She provided some excellent stimulus materials and taught some good sketching techniques in the morning. George provides a great lunch of soup and a variety of breads followed by delicious deserts. Tea and coffee are available throughout the day. In the afternoon Catherine discussed techniques for producing portraits and then we all worked on our own portrait. There were 5 on the course and every one chose a different method and medium to produce their work. A most enjoyable day.
Response from Cowshed Creative (Kentmere Farm Pods and Creative Courses):Thanks so much Hilary for such a lovely review. Good luck with your portrait project and hope to see you again.
This was an excellent course for me. I found it very challenging but left with a very strong desire to improve my drawing. I even set a target of doing one quick portrait a day.
Cowshed Creative is an excellent venue. There’s a roaring fire, excellent food and perfect hosts.
Kat is a wonderful teacher and the course was brilliant from start to finish. I even have a new found love of charcoal after working with pencil for so long, thanks to techniques and methods that Kat has taught me. George and her husband were great hosts at cowshed providing a homely atmosphere alongside delicious food and friendly conversation. Thank you to all for a wonderful day.
