About the Course
Join Claire at the countryside printmaking studio where you will learn how to design and carve your own lino printing block.
The workshop begins with an introduction to linocut, everyone is taught how to use the carving tools and the basic cutting techniques. An initial practice block is made which allows students to experiment with mark making. Students are often surprised at how quickly their skills develop.
Next you will spend time composing your design. You may wish to bring some of your own images to work from, however plenty of inspiration is at hand to help you decide. A maximum of 7 students per workshop allows for a lot of individual tuition time.
You will be shown how to ink your lino block and how to burnish prints by hand, you will also learn how to use the antique cast iron book presses.
Everyone will take home a set of lino block printed cards and envelopes, thier original carving and mark making block and a copy of Oxford Linocut Workshops printmaking guide booklet which covers all the techniques used and a list of printmaking suppliers.
The workshop is hands-on, creative and very informative. It is suitable for complete beginners, everything is explained clearly with demonstrations. Lots of support and advice is given throughout.
Claire is a friendly and encouraging teacher, she has exhibited with the Society of Wood Engravers, at The Mall Galleries in London, as well as regularly taking part in Oxfordshire Artweeks.

Claire is a lovely tutor – just the right balance of theory and practical, fun and safety, she was always reassuring and positive, and gave us all the right amount of attention - help and advice on technique and design - to ensure we got what we needed to come away with our own personal lino block. She's given me the confidence to try this myself in the near future.
I was really thrilled to produce a dozen cards with my print and will be proud to send them to friends and family.
Nice touches with the tea, biscuits and cakes too.

Thank you Claire for a really enjoyable afternoon...you have inspired me! A great teacher, in a fab environment. I love the fact I didnt have a design in mind, no clue of the technique, but went home with some prints & wanting to learn more. Thoroughly recommend Claire and this workshop!

A superb afternoon learning how to linocut and print, I couldn't recommend it highly enough. I went in with zero experience and ended up with a set of cards that I was very pleased with, having had a really absorbing afternoon in a welcoming environment.

We had an informative, enjoyable, creative and fun afternoon with Claire, thank you. The teaching pace was just right, she skillfully and patiently showed us what to do without doing it for us and she was very well organised resulting in us all producing lovely cards to take home, leaving us with a feeling of satisfaction and also that we would like to have another go

Claire is inspirational - from the moment you walk into her studio, you are surrounded by her incredible work and her calm, warm energy. Claire was so encouraging and patient, and through her gentle support and guidance I was able to produce a piece of work I was thrilled with, and which was completely my own. I entered the course a complete beginner and left with the confidence and enthusiasm to carry on independently. What a wonderful way to spend an afternoon!

Not only is Claire a hugely talented artist but she has the patience to encourage complete novices to complete very satisfying pieces of work. She provides advice and guidance but never "takes over" so the end result is all your own work! We will definitely carry on!

Claire is a lovely person with a knowledgeable, gentle and encouraging teaching style. Beautiful location & inspiring workspace with excellent tools to create your own masterpiece (plus great catering with continous tea coffee & drinks available). I am definitely looking forward to attending another workshop. I would highly recommend this workshop to anyone interested in trying a new art form or finding out more about linocut whatever your artistic or creative ability. From simple to incredibly intricate designs, everyone can create a fabulous piece of individual art.

What a totally absorbing and satisfying afternoon! Claire has created a wonderfully calm, creative environment for the lino cutting and printing course, and she walked us through the processes clearly with no pressure at any point. I really appreciated her advice throughout and also the fact that she allowed us to all create our lino blocks and prints 100% ourselves. The variety of end results that the 5 of us on the course created showed how wonderfully individual this is as a craft, and it has certainly inspired me to have a go making more creations at home. I’ll certainly be back for another course with Claire.
