Overview of the day
10am arrival at Sue O'Mara Art in the Woodland Studio, welcomes, introductions, health and safety instructions and overview of the day.
We will discuss the materials we will be using such as oil paints, painting medium, the brushes needed for the project we are going to produce today and what size canvas we will use. Then we will trace or sketch our drawing onto the canvas, begin an underpainting using the appropriate colour.
At around 11.30 we will have a hot drink and biscuit break and see how things are progressing.
We will then continue our painting project using a colour pallet of our chosen oil paints. I will be on hand to guide, encourage and assist you at all times.
We will stop for a supplied lunch (suitable for all dietary needs) at about 1pm for 45 minutes, when you can sit outside on the patio if the weather permits, and enjoy the lovely woodland setting of the studio while you have your lunch.
We will then spend the rest of the afternoon finishing your painting so you have a fabulous finished product. We will have a tea and biscuit break some time in the afternoon so we don’t run out of artistic steam!
Then at around 3.45 we will clean our workstations and brushes and have a photo opportunity where you can show off your newly painted masterpiece.
By the end of the day you will have a painting you will want to hang in pride of place!
Class finishes at 4pm and I do ask people to leave by 4.30pm as I may have an evening class to prepare for.
If you will be redeeming a CraftCourses gift voucher on this course, the voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
We provide everything you will need to produce a lovely painting.
There will be plenty of tea, coffee and biscuits or cake.
Please bring an old apron or overshirt as painting can get a bit messy.
There is lots of parking. The Woodland Studio is set in the lovely East Susses countryside and the studio looks out onto woods.

As a family we booked a beginners lesson with Sue, which was amazing! Ranging from a 12 year old sister to a 55 year old father it was safe to say we had very different ideas of painting, but the very talented Sue was a great teacher and really helped us to all achieve beautiful art which none of us thought we would be capable of! We had a lovely day painting and will definitely be back!
Response from Sue O'Mara Art:Thank you all and I look forward to seeing you again soon! Well done :)
My girlfriends created a bucket list for me and one of the things to do was a life drawing class. Having never done any drawing before I signed up for a day session with sue. Well what can I say from the initial conversation and emails we exchanged sue put me at ease. The woodland studio is a tranquil and enhancing environment. Sue is so easy going and informative. Her life model, also sue was a very brave and inspirational lady also. Arrived without a clue, left feeling inspired to do more. Can't recommend more highly. Thanks sue xx
Response from Sue O'Mara Art:Thank you for the kind words Sarah. You were a fabulous addition to the class, funny and good company, plus you did so well with your drawings. Lets not forget the valuable input you had to in being a life model for the rest of the class in the afternoon. Bucket list item - check! Look forward to seeing you again some time. Best wishes, Sue :) x
My husband surprised me with a one on one oil painting class with Sue. It was amazing, and I enjoyed it tremendously. Sue made me feel at ease, it was a very relaxed and comfortable setting. I have learned so much in the 6 hour course. Sue is a gifted teacher and very patient. I was treated with a lovely lunch outside in the countryside setting. I will definitely be back again for more classes, I am very interested in a jewellery making class. Thank you again, Sue
Response from Sue O'Mara Art:Hi Neryne, it was lovely to have you at the Studio and I am so glad you had a good time. We were lucky with the weather too!
I had one to one lesson with Sue. Sue is a great teacher. She gave me very useful tips, I learned some techniques in oil painting, found it very interesting and engaging. As a novice she made me feel very comfortable.
The studio is very relaxed, located in the countryside. The homemade biscuits were lovely, I enjoyed my lunch.
With Sue’s help and advice I was able to complete a picture that I was proud to take home.
I highly recommend the one day course!
Response from Sue O'Mara Art:Thanks Phil, hope to see you again soon :)
I had a lovely day with Sue learning how to use oil paints in her well appointed studio. Sue is an excellent teacher for beginners like me. The painting I completed combined lots of techniques including mixing colour, use of brushes and perspective. With encouragement and advice from Sue it was possible to complete a painting in one day to take home and keep.
I am now motivated to continue learning to paint with oils thanks to Sue.
As a birthday gift my husband booked 2 days of 1 to 1 tutoring from Sue. I really enjoyed my time with her, she was so patient and knowledgeable and I felt at ease with her right from the start.
I had never used oils to paint with before but with Sue's guidance I produced 2 pieces of work both of which I am quite proud.
I would recommend anyone to try the course and indeed I intend to enrol in the six week course in September.
Thank you Sue for the lovely experience.
Response from Sue O'Mara Art:Thank you Virginia, it was a pleasure to have you at the Studio. I think you will soon be completing some complex pieces! Well done and thanks for being an excellent student!
I had not undertaken any art work since I was at school many years ago. Sue put me at ease very quickly, explaining the process we would follow, the techniques to be used and the expected learning. Sue delivered on all points. The day was a total pleasure, Sue was very kind, excellent at her art and very supportive. She built my confidence quickly and by the end of the day I had produced a painting that I was very proud of and that totally wowed my family. I have no hesitation in recommending Sue and am already booked for my next lesson!
Response from Sue O'Mara Art:Thank you Steve I am so glad you enjoyed your day, you did really well. Looking forward to helping you with your next project! Best wishes, Sue
Really enjoyed my starter session which has led to me being addicted to painting! Sue is wonderfully patient, creative and inspiring. She acts as a critical friend, giving advice honestly and guiding you through new techniques to boost your confidence and skill level. Thoroughly enjoyable and worthwhile! Suggest you give it a go!
I have brought one of Sue’s paintings and it is truly beautiful. A very talented lady - it has made me want to book onto the ‘One day beginners’ class in the new year.
The studio leads out onto woodlands and the atmosphere feels professional and relaxed.
Thank you for my painting.
Loved the courses I have taken. Sue is an excellent teacher, and guided me to complete some lovely art works that all my family was very impressed with. A lovely atmosphere with the studio opening onto a nice garden and woodlands. The lunch was perfect, keeping one going during the full day course. Would recommend Sue and her classes.
Great course, I was amazed how much I learnt in just one day.
What a wonderful introduction to oil painting the 6 week course is! I turned up having never done any oil painting before and after the first 2 sessions I had finished my first painting under the expert guidance of Sue. She is a lovely lady, very calm and encouraging and very experienced so able to answer any queries or concerns I had. She holds the classes in her quiet and light filled studio at the back of her house. I felt very nervous embarking on this course but she has filled me with confidence and I am now on to my 3rd painting which is surprisingly intricate (my choice of subject matter) but I feel happy that with Sue's help I can achieve the picture I set out to do. I would recommend any of Sue's courses to any one who has an interest in oil painting, whether they have any previous experience or not.
The warm welcome given to us by Sue set the tone of this creative but relaxing day. We learnt some very clever techniques and were encouraged to see the positive in every mark we made (even if we thought we had made a mistake). I was amazed to come away with a finished oil painting.
I thoroughly enjoyed the oil painting day course with Sue. She is warm, welcoming and knowledgeable not to mention full of great tips. I surprised myself with the winter scene that I was able to create with Sue’s support and guidance. The day was well paced and I enjoyed every minute. Highly recommended.
