As part of our Autumn Art in the Barn Creative Arts Week, we will be offering an introduction to block printing on fabric.
If you have ever considered designing and creating something to use in your home or thought about making personalised gifts for your family and friends, this is the workshop for you.
Bring along your designs ideas or images and learn how to translate them into designs, before cutting a stamp using Essdee Master Cut and printing your designs. We will initially create paper and card based products, such as gift tags and gift wrap, before printing onto tea towels and tote bags.
This workshop is suitable for people with a range of creative experiences, wishing to explore printing stamps on to paper and fabric.
The workshop will be delivered by Alison Butler and Liz Wellby: Alison has over 25 years experience as a textile designer and book illustrator, whilst Liz is an experienced fine artist, teacher and maker, with a particular interest in print.
Our venue for our creative arts week is an inspirational thatched Long Barn, in the heart of the Meon Valley. This is a light and spacious venue which allows you to be socially distanced from the other participants, with use of your own equipment.
Depending on government requirements in October, all appropriate social distancing measures will be in place.
Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 2 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.
The workshop will run from 10 - 4pm, with places limited to 10, including; tuition, all materials* and use of equipment will be provided. Drinks and refreshments will be provided throughout the day; just bring your lunch.
* Two tea towels or two tote bags or one tea towel and one tote bag will be provided - please state your preference at the time of booking. Further items may also be ordered/ purchased at the time of booking: tea towels and small tote bags - £3 and large tote bags - £5.
Please be aware that late bookings may not have this choice, as an order will have to be placed several days ahead of the workshop date.
If you have any pieces of plain or patterned cotton or linen, please bring these along and try printing on them - please wash and iron ahead of the workshop.

Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Dear Marion,
It was a hectic week and then to spend six hours in the calm of the barn learning a new skill was just amazing. I came away not only with a hand printed apron but with a feeling of achievement and enthusiasm for making more of my own stamps and continuing my journey with block prints. I really enjoyed the day and would really recommend it to anyone wanting to learn a new skill or just to reset and take a day out to focus on yourself.
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Dear Zanna ,
Great day out - beautiful setting, patient and thoughtful teaching. Friendly group - wonderful way to share a day, learning a new skill in lovely company.
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Hi Kate,
Thoroughly enjoyed the day. The tutors were knowledgeable and very helpful.
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Dear Lindsey,
I really enjoyed the block printing course run by Alison and Liz which I recently attended. The location was fabulous. The welcome was lovely from the start despite the social distancing. Alison and Liz explained each section of the process in a relaxed, informal way whilst still covering health and safety and all the important bits. Personally I quite liked the social distancing aspect because it meant I concentrated on the work in hand instead of chatting with new faces. We were not hurried out of the workshop at the end of the alloted time but allowed to finish our work, which was very much appreciated. Alison and Liz went out of their way to show us how to continue with our newly learned skill. I would definitely recommend a course with them and look forward to doing another myself.
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Dear Judith,
What a thoroughly enjoyable day I spent with nine other ‘students’ under the experienced and watchful gaze of Alison and Liz. The block printing course was very special and I feel I may have discovered a new hobby! Alison and Liz were great teachers; so patient and clear in their demonstrations and due to the small class size, there was plenty of one to one support, with close adherence to Covid safety regulations.
The barn is a wonderful venue in which to allow the creative juices to flow and everything was so carefully set out with individual tables laden with all the resources needed for the day. Tea and coffee is available throughout and the six hours sped by. The course is excellent value and I was delighted with my creations!
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Dear Pen,
You will be made feel at home as soon as you enter the stunning barn by Alison & Liz who are excellent tutors and very talented artists.
All your needs are catered for and nothing is too much trouble, COVID guidelines were well thought out and students safety was paramount without being oppressive.
With their support and encouragement you make designs worthy of printing on fabrics, paper and card and then you become hooked, I can’t wait to visit the art store for supplies.
Thank you ladies you have created a unique and special place to impart your creative and artistic skills.
Looking forward to learning more in the future.
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Dear Fran,
What an amazing escape from the stresses of life this course was. Beautiful surroundings. All appropriate saftey measures in place .
Im a complete novice so was apprehensive but keen to learn.
I was well supported and encouraged by the lovely instructor. Had plenty of time to try lots of different approaches to this art form. The day just flew by.
I will definitely be back to try other art projects here. It was a real tonic. Thank you
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Hi Carol,
Myself and 2 friends had a very happy day block printing with Liz and Alison. It is a brilliant location- gorgeous setting and fabulous barn. We learnt lots and produced lots. Cups of tea too and biscuits. It was extremely well organised and Alison and Liz were good teachers. Thank you.
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Dear Rosy, Grania and Charlie, really pleased you had a great day . It was lovely working with you all , great collaborative work ! Hope to see you in March .best wishes Alison and Liz
Really super day with friendly and knowledgable tutors in a gorgeous location. As a complete beginner I was a bit worried about how I would get on but both Alison and Liz were very patient and approachable. Covid guidelines were explained clearly and it was easy to physically distance, even during the demonstrations. I would thoroughly recommend both the course and the tutors. Thanks for a lovely day!
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Hi Sarah ,
A really excellent day. The barn is in beautiful surroundings so the peaceful day starts from the moment you approach. Easy parking right by the barn. Good COVID precautions taken, e.g. spaced out tables, wear a mask when moving about, one-way system through the barn.
All you needed for the day was laid down on the table and ready as you arrived, which gave a little ripple of excitement from the beginning! Alison and Liz were very welcoming.
The teaching was clear and easy to follow, even for those completely new to the whole process and Liz and Alison shared their time between people so you never felt at a loss.
We all went home with lots of examples from the day and hopefully the confidence to start experimenting ourselves.
One tip - I had not thought properly about the venue being a big barn, with stone floors and high ceilings and had not dressed warmly enough for the day. There are heaters high in the ceiling and on the walls, which Alison put on, but if you go during colder months remember to dress warmly in layers!
Overall, a really great course in a lovely venue with very friendly tutors.
