On Tuesday 6th April, we will be Block Printing in repeat on the fabric
Designing and cutting your own stamps to print onto fabric and paper is a particularly pleasing occupation and wholly addictive. It allows you to create handcrafted gifts for family and friends or simply create beautiful tea towels, tote bags and even cushions for your own home.
We have run this popular workshop for several years and we are pleased to offer a different take on block printing, with a particular focus on using repeat patterns, rather than more random placing.
Join us in our thatched Long Barn in the heart of the Meon Valley on Sunday 20th March, to explore how to create handprinted fabric products. Simply bring along your design ideas for images, patterns and shapes and learn how to translate these into a design, before cutting a stamp using Essdee Master Cut and printing your design. We will initially create paper and card-based products, such as gift tags and gift wrap, before printing onto tea towels or tote bags.
The workshop will be delivered by Alison Butler and Liz Wellby: Alison has over 25 years of experience as a textile designer and book illustrator, whilst Liz is an experienced fine artist, teacher and maker, with a particular interest in print.
This workshop is suitable for people with a range of creative experiences, wishing to explore printing stamps onto paper and fabric, for a maximum of 10 people.
Please bring along: an apron, A5/6 ideas/drawings/images that inspire you, a large newspaper in which to transport your work home and your lunch.
Should you have samples of cotton or linen you would like to experiment with printing onto, feel free to bring these along; just wash and iron them ahead of the workshop.
Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 2 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.
The block printing workshop will include all materials* and the use of equipment, refreshments will be served throughout the day; runs from 10 - 4 pm and costs £95.
*One tea towel and a tote bag or two tea towels or two tote bags will be provided; please state your preference at the time of booking. If your booking is close to the workshop, your choices may be more limited, as the order will have been placed. Further items may also be ordered*/purchased at the time of booking: tea towels and small tote bags - £3, large tote bags - £5 and aprons - £12.50
* Please be aware that payment is required at the time of ordering

Very enjoyable and interesting day, nothing was too much trouble for Alison.
Excellent instruction and resources. Great to be in a small group, so that we all had plenty of help and encouragement.
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Dear Mary,
Alison is a wonderful guide to the world of hand block printing. She took us through the various stages and processes without making it seem difficult or overly demanding.
Alison allows one to progress at one's own pace and is extremely willing to add her expertise when one asks for assistance. I enjoyed having such a light airy environment to work in. The whole workshop was well resourced and planned, yet there was an informality and friendliness which would suit any learner lacking in confidence.
This was a delightful experience and I will be carrying on with this hobby at home.
Thank you Alison for making this a memorable and rewarding workshop.
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Dear Hellis,
Lovely relaxed course. Great teacher. No pressure environment for complete beginners. Thoroughly enjoyed learning block printing with this teacher. Lovely, organised work environment with all tools provided. Lovely touch having home made brownies and tea 😀
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Dear Saoirse, thank you for your review and feedback. It was lovely to work with you yesterday. You produced some lovely designs which hopefully you will continue to develop at home. I wish you all the best.
Alison was the perfect host including the delicious home baked brownies! As a complete novice, Alison took great care to explain the processes and allowed me all the time I needed to practice before progressing to the next stage. Alison helped with design ideas and refinements and I was delighted with all my take home pieces.
The venue is quiet and peaceful and the craft room exceptionally well equipped and comfortable. Plenty of parking and all the facilities you need for a brilliant creative experience.
I’ve been totally inspired and have acquired all the equipment needed to carry on my newly acquired skills at home.
A fantastic day and highly recommended.

Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Dear Marion,
It was a hectic week and then to spend six hours in the calm of the barn learning a new skill was just amazing. I came away not only with a hand printed apron but with a feeling of achievement and enthusiasm for making more of my own stamps and continuing my journey with block prints. I really enjoyed the day and would really recommend it to anyone wanting to learn a new skill or just to reset and take a day out to focus on yourself.
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Dear Zanna ,

Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Dear Lindsey,
I really enjoyed the block printing course run by Alison and Liz which I recently attended. The location was fabulous. The welcome was lovely from the start despite the social distancing. Alison and Liz explained each section of the process in a relaxed, informal way whilst still covering health and safety and all the important bits. Personally I quite liked the social distancing aspect because it meant I concentrated on the work in hand instead of chatting with new faces. We were not hurried out of the workshop at the end of the alloted time but allowed to finish our work, which was very much appreciated. Alison and Liz went out of their way to show us how to continue with our newly learned skill. I would definitely recommend a course with them and look forward to doing another myself.
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Dear Judith,
What a thoroughly enjoyable day I spent with nine other ‘students’ under the experienced and watchful gaze of Alison and Liz. The block printing course was very special and I feel I may have discovered a new hobby! Alison and Liz were great teachers; so patient and clear in their demonstrations and due to the small class size, there was plenty of one to one support, with close adherence to Covid safety regulations.
The barn is a wonderful venue in which to allow the creative juices to flow and everything was so carefully set out with individual tables laden with all the resources needed for the day. Tea and coffee is available throughout and the six hours sped by. The course is excellent value and I was delighted with my creations!
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Dear Pen,
You will be made feel at home as soon as you enter the stunning barn by Alison & Liz who are excellent tutors and very talented artists.
All your needs are catered for and nothing is too much trouble, COVID guidelines were well thought out and students safety was paramount without being oppressive.
With their support and encouragement you make designs worthy of printing on fabrics, paper and card and then you become hooked, I can’t wait to visit the art store for supplies.
Thank you ladies you have created a unique and special place to impart your creative and artistic skills.
Looking forward to learning more in the future.
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Dear Fran,
What an amazing escape from the stresses of life this course was. Beautiful surroundings. All appropriate saftey measures in place .
Im a complete novice so was apprehensive but keen to learn.
I was well supported and encouraged by the lovely instructor. Had plenty of time to try lots of different approaches to this art form. The day just flew by.
I will definitely be back to try other art projects here. It was a real tonic. Thank you
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Hi Carol,
Myself and 2 friends had a very happy day block printing with Liz and Alison. It is a brilliant location- gorgeous setting and fabulous barn. We learnt lots and produced lots. Cups of tea too and biscuits. It was extremely well organised and Alison and Liz were good teachers. Thank you.
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Dear Rosy, Grania and Charlie, really pleased you had a great day . It was lovely working with you all , great collaborative work ! Hope to see you in March .best wishes Alison and Liz
Really super day with friendly and knowledgable tutors in a gorgeous location. As a complete beginner I was a bit worried about how I would get on but both Alison and Liz were very patient and approachable. Covid guidelines were explained clearly and it was easy to physically distance, even during the demonstrations. I would thoroughly recommend both the course and the tutors. Thanks for a lovely day!
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Hi Sarah ,
A really excellent day. The barn is in beautiful surroundings so the peaceful day starts from the moment you approach. Easy parking right by the barn. Good COVID precautions taken, e.g. spaced out tables, wear a mask when moving about, one-way system through the barn.
All you needed for the day was laid down on the table and ready as you arrived, which gave a little ripple of excitement from the beginning! Alison and Liz were very welcoming.
The teaching was clear and easy to follow, even for those completely new to the whole process and Liz and Alison shared their time between people so you never felt at a loss.
We all went home with lots of examples from the day and hopefully the confidence to start experimenting ourselves.
One tip - I had not thought properly about the venue being a big barn, with stone floors and high ceilings and had not dressed warmly enough for the day. There are heaters high in the ceiling and on the walls, which Alison put on, but if you go during colder months remember to dress warmly in layers!
Overall, a really great course in a lovely venue with very friendly tutors.
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Dear Anne,
