A fun and useful day learning how to design and create a needle felted picture. This is suitable for beginners and the more experienced. There is a certain amount of dexterity needed, so may not be suitable for severely arthritic hands.
All materials will be sent before hand, after we have discussed a chosen design idea. This may be drawn from existing photographs or sourced from online sources or books, magazines etc.
We will then work through the process online together usually in a small group or one to one basis. I will show and guide you through the techniques needed to get the outcome you are aiming for in your picture.
Using the felting needles and wool provided you will learn to 'paint' the picture you need onto the wool backing fabric provided.
It can be quite an intense and engrossing experience and ideal as a form of mindfulness.
We will have a break for lunch and resume again afterwards. There is no pressure and you can go at your own pace. Hopefully by the end of the day you will have the confidence and skills to be able to create a felting experience on your own.
If there is time you can start to embellish your design with the embroidery thread I have provided. I will show you some stitches.
If you will be redeeming a CraftCourses gift voucher on this course, the voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
A needle felting kit consisting of
merino wool in selected colours,
3 felting needles,
wool backing piece.
Some embroidery threads
What you will need
Everything you need to produce your felt picture is provided.
Optional extras you may wish to purchase for yourself are.
leather finger protecters. These are not expensive, but most folk after trying them choose not to use them. You tend to stab your finger just the once!
Embroidery thread will be provided for you to embellish your design is your so choose. So a suitable needle will be required with a large eye.
A phone or pc set up to use live video. Whats app is a good one to use and is free to down load. Or another form of live video such as Skype or zoom..
If you have a couple of old brushes with a lot of bristles you can use these to mix the colours together. But its not necessary as you can just pull the fibres out individually to mix together.
Yesterday I spent a super day online with Catherine learning how to create a needle felt picture. The original plan to be in Orkney had to be postponed until next year.
However I can thoroughly recommend an online course with a Catherine. She is an excellent teacher and also very good company. I have done some felting before which probably made the online experience easier but I have no doubt that Catherine would be able adapt to teach beginners as well.
I was very proud of my end results. Thank you Catherine - I look forward to meeting you in Orkney next year.
