Painting in Oils - Climbing Flowers

Painting in Oils - Climbing Flowers

We will be painting a small group of climbing flowers such as Clematis or Anemones. Working ‘alla prima’ in oil paint we will focus on leaving bits of our under-painting peeking through. We will look at ways of applying the paint in a dynamic and interesting way: focusing on colour, brushwork and composition.

What to bring:

An ipad / phone / tablet.

Your own photographs of climbing flowers cropped close and square (either printed or on an ipad- see ‘’ for a great range of free stock photographs you could use)

A selection of synthetic brushes to include some ‘short flat’ synthetic acrylic brushes. I like to use:

Daler Rowney System 3: short flat ¼”, ½”, ¾”.

Daler Rowney System 3 filbert size 2

Small round size 1 synthetic brush

Palette knife - Winsor and newton size 22 or similar

‘Liquin’ painting medium

A flat mixing palette - paper palettes are fine. (£2 in ‘The Works’)

A clean plastic takeaway box with a lid

An empty cereal box to take your work home in

Acrylic colours as follows – Titanium White, Cerulean Blue, Pthalo blue, Naples yellow, Cadmium Red, Cadmium yellow, Permanent rose

Oil colours as follows - Titanium White, Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium red, Alizarine Crimson, Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, French Utramarine, Phthalo Blue.

A good size jar for low odour thinners/white spirit substitute for cleaning your brushes, some rags or plenty of tissues to wipe brushes clean.

If you’re trying oils for the first time- oil paint and medium can be supplied for use on the day at additional cost of £6.
