About the Course

This course runs over six consecutive weekday evenings between 7 and 9.30pm.

The project is to fashion a beautiful bench or side-table from live-edge timber, using traditional green-woodworking techniques. The design is based on the traditional ‘pig bench’ used historically as a piece of agricultural equipment, but it makes an excellent dining bench or occasional table in the modern home.

You’ll learn the process of crafting the legs and undercarriage of the bench from green timber using traditional hand tools such as the froe, drawknife and spokeshave. You’ll then smooth off the top and sides of the bench before being taken through the process of assembling the piece using traditional chair-making joinery techniques.

Then its yours to take home and sit on, look at, put things on – the choice is yours!

This course is a great introduction to the craft of green woodwork and an ideal stepping-stone to my more advanced 'Make a chair' course or more immersive chair-making courses in Wales. If you are interested in taking a combination of these I offer discounts for multiple bookings. Please contact me directly.

If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

What's included in the price?

Basic timber is included. There will be an additional charge for the wood used for the table or bench top. This will be between £40-80 depending on availability of timber and the size of your piece.

Tea, coffee and biscuits provided throughout the course.

A thoroughly enjoyable course, delivered brilliantly by Ben. Ben created a comfortable and relaxed environment, whilst imparting his excellent knowledge of green woodwork and we all learned a great deal in a relatively small amount of time. Highly recommended!

I loved this course and I am so proud of my beautiful new bench. Ben was an excellent teacher guiding us carefully and giving detailed instructions as we went. I have never made anything out of wood before and am delighted with the result. Will definitely be doing another course with Ben.

This is fun! Building your own wood bench is a great experience! And doing this in such a friendly and welcoming atmosphere like in Ben's course is even better (and I'm not only talking about the nice cup of tea and free biscuits ;) ). Ben really makes the difference. He's always spot on, knows what you're doing and takes the time to explain every step in detail, also a second time if needed.

Ben is a great teacher and he guides you through building a bench from scratch. We all worked at different speeds but he made sure we were all involved and knew what we were doing. And the bench at the end was a great addition to my dining room.
