Join us in my new studio upstairs in Oriel Makers, Cardiff for this introduction to designing and making your own bespoke leather sandals.
Using basic tools, you will be walked through the steps to creating a pair of well fitted shoes that you can be proud of. The best thing about this workshop is that you will leave with all the skills necessary for making sandals again at home using easily accessible tools and equipment.
Nia will be bringing a few key designs along to the workshop which you will be working from to create your own sandals. From these patterns you will cut your uppers and soles, choosing your leather from a selection of handpicked colours and weights. Soles will be made from compact rubber soling material available in 3 colours.
No previous experience is necessary but this workshop is a full day and can get very tiring. Focus is required throughout the day and confidence with hand tools would be beneficial. It is an incredibly gratifying process though and the hard work is always worth it. Nia is always on hard to guide you through all the necessary steps in creating your perfect sandals.
Workshop location - Oriel Makers Gallery, Pen y Lan Road, Roath, Cardiff

About Studio ND
Studio ND started when I met a sandal maker in London. I couldn’t believe that she was making shoes by herself in a tiny space. I had always felt like shoes were a mystical object that came from a factory somewhere. It hadn’t occurred to me that I could make them in my bedroom with a knife and some glue. So I started doing some research.
I discovered a quick and experimental process that allows freedom of creativity with consistently good results.
My sandal making workshops are for beginners and start with just a knife, glue and some leather. I’ve attended workshops where I’ve left with something beautiful and handmade only to get home and realise I have none of the tools or materials I need to make it again. For my own workshops I aim to keep it simple. In all honesty, all of the information and tools you need can be found online if you look hard enough. But I might be able to save you a bit of frustration.
The leather I use is hand selected. I travel to London and Northampton and choose whatever looks and feels good. So although the leather will change from one workshop to the next, you will always have a pick of high quality leather in a beautiful range of colours.
I don’t want people to feel intimidated by making. I think making should not only be about creating and owning beautiful objects that enhance your life, but also about feeling empowered and independent. At the risk of feeling a little exposed, I think making has changed the course of my life for the better and that is something that should be shared.

I signed up myself and my Mam to one of Nia's classes to make sandals. I was looking for something interesting and unique the both of us could do together. Nia was enthusiastic, friendly, patient, and helpful. We were both very pleased with the finished sandals and would definitely recommend the course.
Brilliant course, Nia was very knowledgeable about her craft and to pass on information on how to get started at home, where to get leather supplies from, and pattern adjustment. I came home with a unique beautiful pair of sandals. Thanks again Nia!
Thank you so much for your lovely review Sharon! I shared a picture of your sandals online and they had such a great response! A really lovely and unique pair of shoes. So glad you enjoyed the workshop :)
What a joy to make your own shoes! My friend and I signed up to one of Nia's workshops, despite no previous shoe-making experience, and we had a wonderful day. In her cosy studio above an independent shop selling work by local artists and makers, Nia took us through the process step by step. From marking out the leather and cutting the pieces, to punching holes and stitching soles, she provided all the tools and encouragement we needed. I am now the proud owner of handmade bright pink espadrilles with blue tassels. I'd love to go back and make myself a pair of hi-top sneakers!
