About the Course
Come and experience the absorbing and tactile world of Leather-work. Using traditional skills and techniques you will create your own unique item taking it from raw material to finished piece.
Tuition is delivered by Master Saddler and Leather Artisan Karen Ellis at her workshop in rural Aberdeenshire.
Workshops are run in small groups of around four, which allows for lots of individual attention, while providing a chance for shared inspiration and encouragement and a great creative vibe!
Suitable for beginners who would like an insight into the world of leather-working and the more experienced crafter who is keen to try a new skill.
During our day together you will:
-Work with traditional veg tanned or bridle leather;
-Choose from a selection of soft,coloured, textured and patent leathers for added design elements.
-Gain a basic understanding of and practice using various leather-working tools such as knives, punches and edgers;
-Learn various point finishes, such as bridle, egg and round.
-Learn traditional saddle stitching with two needles including adding a keeper;
-Learn to add lining to a belt or padding to a dog collar, and add inserts or surface decoration to your own design.
Leave with your own traditionally crafted belt or dog collar that will give years of use and pleasure.

Fantastic course. The morning was full of fun, laughter and great chat. Learnt lots about traditional leather techniques as well as modern techniques. Came away with a lovely pink belt - very proud of my stitching. I am keen to return and try my hand at making something else. Karen was very knowledgable, patience and has great artistic ideas. Highly recommend.

I signed up for this course because I had been doing leatherwork on my own learning via YouTube videos and I wanted a little more guidance. There were two of us signed up with interest in making bags so we strayed from the dog collars and ended up making leather trays which would teach us the basic skills needed to then move on to bags. Karen was great to be so flexible!
I have to say, this course far exceeded all of my expectations. Karen was so patient and allowed us to try out any tools we wanted. She even let us video her saddle stitching so we could reference it later on. She has years of experience in working with leather and could answer all of our questions easily. She was great to learn from and I highly recommend this course and her as a teacher. I can't wait to take another class with her!

This was a fantastic day. I came away with a lovely leather belt made from scratch and even learn't how to stitch leather with two needles. Karen Ellis knows her craft and I learned so much in just one day. I recommend this course for anyone thinking of starting to work with leather or just for the experience of trying a new craft.
Great day, lovely cakes and a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

An excellent course run by Karen. I have never made anything in my life but came away at the end of the day having made a wonderful leather belt under Karen's expert tuition. I felt I had achieved so much.

Response from Karmarell:Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I really appreciate it. You were a lovely group of ladies to teach and I am so happy that you all enjoyed your day.
I had a fabulous day making a rolled leather collar for Skye under the diligent eye of Karen at Karmarell. I would highly recommend this course whether you are crafty or not. Delighted with my collar. Thank you.
