Description

Set in our beautiful tranquil 40 acre ancient oak woodland in Cornwall, you will be welcomed with an open fire and cup of tea when we will give you an outline of the two days. This course will teach you the black art of making charcoal, whilst sustainably managing a woodland. You will learn the process of charcoal burning to make quality sustainable charcoal, using small round wood or thinnings and wood produced from ongoing woodland management, thereby gaining an insight into how it feels to work in the woods. Once the burn is lit we will turn our attention to green woodcraft, an age-old method of making practical and beautiful objects from freshly cut ‘green’ wood. Under the guidance of our experienced tutors, you will learn how to use traditional hand tools including a shave horse, axes, knives, crook knives, to craft, carve and create spatulas, butter knives, gypsy flowers and simple three legged stools. You will learn safe knife techniques that can be used to carve beautiful walking sticks. The principles and practicalities of tool sharpening will also be covered during this course as sharp tools are essential for green woodwork. At the start of the second day will open the kiln and reveal the fruits of our labours. For lunch that day we will test our product by cooking lunch on the BBQ. You will then have plenty of time to complete and projects you have started. Why not consider staying the night before the workshop giving you a deeper experience of being in nature, stay in our 3 acre meadow, take a dip in the river and enjoying the crystal clear night sky afforded us by our remote location on the foothills of Bodmin Moor, and enjoy an evening relaxing around the campfire. You can hire one of our 5m bell tents, £95 for up to two people then £40/additional person up to a max of five per tent. Or you can bring your own tent and camp within our 40-acre woodland: price £10.00pp/night. We also run a variety of other courses and programs . There are 1-day, 2-day options, as well as the opportunity to come an “Just Stay” and enjoy 40 acres of ancient woodland all to yourself. Speak to us about bespoke workshops .
