Fissures II - Nuno Felted Mosaic Scarves

X

Description

Inspired by the Icelandic landscape, this workshop focuses on making a nuno felted scarf by creating fissure patterns and complex surface textures.

During my visit to Iceland in 2019, I was struck by the juxtaposition of the rugged landscapes with the fragility of the environment and precarious existence of life on the island. As a result I have been exploring these aspects of the Icelandic environment by fusing felted wool and silk fabrics. Taking this inspiration I have designed this workshop in which we will explore how to create pre-felt and apply this fused wool to silk fabrics to design your own unique nuno felted scarf.

Working with merino wool we will embellish the wool surface with silk & viscose fibres to prepare a pre-felt. You will learn how to dye your silk charden fabric in your chosen colour and understand the principles of nuno felting. By the close of the workshop you will create a unique scarf having learnt the nuno felting process to bond the pre-felted fabric with the silk fabric.

This is a great opportunity to learn several new techniques during a one day workshop and apply them to creating a finished scarf.

Small workshop groups are guaranteed, allowing you plenty of individual tuition. I will guide you through each stage of the process and supply illustrated handout notes to take home, giving you all the information you need to continue future felt making projects.

Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 4 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.

What's included in the price?

All materials and light refreshments are included. A generous supply of tea, coffee & biscuits are available throughout the day to help fuel your creativity. You are advised to bring along a packed lunch.

We have aprons, but advise bringing along a water proof apron if you have one. Wear comfortable shoes and 'old' clothes that you don't mind getting damp or dyed.

Your tutor will be Emma Jackson, a felt maker with over twenty years experience teaching, designing & making felt for her award winning textiles company, Silversoles. The workshop will take place in her home studio in South Birmingham with a small group of no more than five. Please note: the studio is situated at the bottom of a garden with one step up to access the building.

Covid-19 Prevention Measures:
Please be reassured that the studio has been cleaned and hand sanitiser, face shields, masks and gloves are all available for you to make use of during the workshop. We take the protection of workshop attendees seriously and have undertaken Covid -19 prevention measures to minimise the risk of contamination. We have also reduced maximum workshop numbers for your safety. A toilet for the exclusive use of attendees during the workshop is provided. We ask all attendees to take personal responsibility for their health and the health of others attending the workshop and make use of the sanitation / covid prevention products available, attend to social distancing etiquette and consider their health status prior to attending. We politely ask you not to attend if you have experienced any of the Covid-19 symptoms (including a high temperature, sudden and persistent cough, loss or change in your sense of smell) and to notify us if you develop any symptoms or are tested positive in the weeks after the workshop. The workshop was as good as I had hoped, and given the number of postponements because of covid restrictions, my hopes were very high!
Communication about the course and details of the day were clear and reassuring. The venue is excellent and levels of comfort and hospitality were very good, making a long day pass very quickly. But the content of the workshop was the most important element and was absolutely excellent, from the preparation before the day, the explanation , demonstration and general guidance during the workshop, and the clear notes and photos provided to help me with my own attempts in future. Emma was very good company, all the materials were to hand and I learned a great deal, as well as coming home with a scarf I am proud to have made, ( with help! ).Thank you.

This course couldnt have been better. Lovely venue, conducive to the task, lots of laughs, a really skilled, passionate tutor with answers to all felting queries, and support at all stages of constructing the scarf. So many lovely things, gorgeous colours, and a real generosity in sharing all of these, plus her skills and time. Best of all, I now have a unique beautiful scarf. Can't recommend the day more, do it, you wont be disappointed!

Response from Emma Jackson (Silversoles - Felted Textiles):
