Local artists Cass Barron and Mark Kirkham share some of their favourite bookbinding and sketching techniques in this collaborative workshop. The day will be split between The Arienas Collective workspace and local points of interest around Edinburgh's New Town, including the National Portrait Gallery.
Over the course of the day, Cass will introduce a range of book making techniques, including single sheet Japanese Stab binding, concertina fold books and a more substantial leather bound sketchbook.
With Mark’s guidance you will add colour washes to your pages before taking them out and about on a sketching tour of the local area. You will work on short detailed drawings to longer perspective pieces in ink and watercolour.
Both Mark and Cass will help you throughout the day and be on hand to answer any questions you may have. You will quickly pick up sketching skills while increasing your confidence in your artistic ability, and with your newfound bookbinding techniques you will be able to make your own sketchbooks forevermore!
The class size is kept small so that Cass and Mark can give you all the help and support you need to get the most from your day with us.
Refunds are not available on this booking. Start dates may be amended on request.
The price includes access to all the equipment you will need, all materials, a buffet style lunch and refreshments. And of course you will take home the lovely personalised sketchbook you have created.
The artists will have kits available to buy should you wish to continue your bookbinding or sketching at home.

Such an enjoyable day of face-to-face crafting. The book binding with Cass was as always clear, unhurried and helpful. Sketching was the challenge for me, but Mark made time to help each participant with their sketches and give plenty tips. The Arienas Collective is a lovely space to work in and the whole day was a rare treat.
Response from The Arienas Collective:Hi Lynda
A fantastic workshop with very high quality tuition. A lovely environment and tasty lunch. Enjoyed the mix of making a sketchbook and then getting out and about in the afternoon. Learnt loads with excellent follow up notes. Looking forward to exploring their other workshops.
Response from The Arienas Collective:Hi Ann
Superb course by Cass. Loved the materials used and how it’s transformed into an amazing hand bound book. Love mine so much!
Response from The Arienas Collective:Hi Emma. Thanks for the lovely review. We're delighted you're so much in love with your beautiful hand-bound book, and look forward to welcoming you back again soon. Best wishes, Lynn :-)
Super class. Well organised in a lovely casual environment. Good hands-on tuition from Cass for the bookbinding. Really love my sketchbook-it's been much admired by my arty and non-arty friends alike! Afternoon sketching was really enlightening. Picked up a lot of tips from Mark on how to tackle line and wash subjects, perspective, tone etc. Especially appreciated the care taken to accommodate dietary requirements for snacks and lunch. All in all a real treat of a day!
Response from The Arienas Collective:Hello Shona. Thank you so much for your lovely review. I'm glad you enjoyed both workshop sessions - we think it's a great combination: learning how to make your own sketchbook with Cass, and then taking it out and about with Mark to start filling the pages with sketches. Lovely to hear it's being much admired by friends and that you picked up so many helpful tips. We hope to welcome you back to The Arienas Collective soon. Best wishes, Lynn :-)
