Description

Originating from Japan, kurinuki is a traditional hand-building technique involving hollowing out a block of clay and carving the exterior surface. The kurinuki process is fun, straightforward and very calming. Join Debbie to explore a different way to work with clay; Kurinuki involves carving both the inside and the exterior to form a vessel or box. The intention is to make a vessel with a highly textured surface. We will form the blocks of clay, and then carve using knives, carving tools and wires. Over the course of the workshop we will make a cup, a vase and a box. Debbie will bring 3 different clays for you to try – stoneware, earthenware & crank. Debbie will dry, fire and glaze and return your work to Micklems Farm for you to collect. Alternative arrangements can be made. Skills and Techniques covered: - Forming the clay blocks - Working with 3 different clays - Thinking about the design before starting to carve - Carving using specific tools on both the interior and exterior of the pots - Forming both lids and foot rings as part of the pot or box - Adding colour using slips At the end of the day, Debbie will take your work back to her studio fir glazing and firing. The pots will be ready for collection in about 4-6 weeks. Materials: Materials will be provided by the tutor. The approximate cost of these will be £30 to include clay, glazing and firing, payable to the tutor during the course. The items you will need to bring with you are listed below. What to bring: - Apron, old tea-towels, notes books & pens if you wish to take notes. - A packed lunch
