Aaron is an arts trained (BA hons fine art), time served smith who spent 6 years working as the demonstrating blacksmith at the Museum of Welsh Life. Fantastic and enjoyable course. Relaxed pace, but produced more items than I expected (7 separate items of metal work). Aaron is a knowledgeable and an encouraging teacher. I am definitely considering signing up for the other courses he runs.

Response from Ferric Fusion:Thank you so much for your positive review. Really glad you enjoyed the course.
Really enjoyed the taster day. Really nice atmosphere, and Aaron was great - super friendly, very knowledgeable and happy to help when things went wrong. Would recommend!
Oli Darlington - - #23023
This course was great. It has a relaxed atmosphere with lots opportunities to get involved and make some cool pieces to take home with you.
Aaron is very knowledgeable and is willing to help if you get stuck or have any questions about the forging process.
Daniel - - #21561
Absolutely fantastic handson course. Aaron is an excellent and patient teacher who is also very generous with his time and knowledge. Nothing is too difficult for him and he is happy to encourage your individual creativity. My husband and I and my 2 sons did the 2 day workshop as a birthday present to ourselves and we all cane away very inspired and happy with what we had created with Aaron’s help. We made some amazing candelabra, a full length coat stand and very cute seahorse hooks and other types of hooks and even some knives. It was a wonderful experience . Thank you so much Aaron. We loved our time with you.
Jen Leighton - - #17679
What a great present this turned out to be. Aaron skilfully and patiently introduced us to the art of blacksmithing with his easy and relaxed teaching style. Within the first hour we were forging useful hooks which progressed into a steady production which helped to familiarise us with the furnace, tools and environment. We swiftly moved onto a more ambitious project which included splitting mild steel bar and riveting. I was particularly pleased with the twist decorated poker we forged after lunch. Aaron was always there to help resurrect any aspect that was creeping out of control so there was no feeling that the piece would end in failure.
My wife had a lovely day sketching down on the coast at Laugharne where we found good accommodation within 4 miles of the forge.
This was a very professionally run course thanks to Aaron and his family team. Highly recommended.

An outstanding day with Aaron at Ferric Fusion. Having done similar courses in other crafts elsewhere, I have got used to coming away with some utter tat that I daren't show even the most sympathetic friends. This one has been different, though. The things we made were excellent and I am so proud of what I've come away with.
Aaron has a great teaching style - you can see his background in teaching and displaying the craft come through. His relaxed nature belies a real eye for detail. The course is an excellent, full day of blacksmithing. With a brilliant sense of humour, he will show you that nothing is unrecoverable in blacksmithing - even if you make a complete hash of the project, he'll tap it back in line! Every one who did the course (5 of us) came away exhausted and buzzing.
I cannot recommend this course enough.

My wife treated me for my 64th birthday to Aaron's one day starter course and it has to rank as one of the best presents she has ever sorted for me. The course was informative and interesting and I came away with several, self made, useful objects including a wall hung triple coat hook and decorative poker that my daughter immediately stole for her wood burner! A brilliant day. Many thanks Aaron.
Brian - - #16291
Had this day course as a present last year and finally got round to doing it. Absolutely loved it! Aaron was great, very interesting and I could have watched him work all day. Learnt so much in a short time and made some really useful stuff to take home. Now have the Blacksmith-ing bug!
Rob McCusker - - #15863
Bought this one day blacksmithing beginners course for my dad for Christmas who at the tender age of 77 has discovered through YouTube a passion for metalwork.
Of course that meant I had to go along as well. 😇
Aaron provided a day of instruction and advice that made a 7.5 hour day seem like it went in 10 minutes.
Very practical and hands on from the beginning, we learnt so many new skills and very quickly were putting these rudimentary skills to use making lovely hand made items which we could take home and show off.
We both thoroughly enjoyed the experience and after seeing the photos I took of the day I now have my son wanting to come next time.
And there will be a next time. We have to come back to check if Aaron has increased the anvil count. We were up to 13 I believe.
Thank you again Aaron and team for a day we will both remember for a long time.
Ian Young - - #12898
What a fantastic day!! A very relaxed atmosphere and Aaron is so knowledgeable about so many things. Masses of hands-on 'doing' and it was surprising how little strength was needed to form the metal into something pretty. I can't believe I came home with such professional-looking and useful items - brilliant! Highly recommended. :-)
Sandy Andrews - - #11993
Lovely day. I am not very practical which was partly why I wanted to try this course & it was a great introduction to the art of blacksmithing. Aaron was very patient & gave individual attention to each one of us. Would highly reccommend.
Alison Edwards - - #11972
What an absolutely incredible day! Aaron is a superb blacksmith and equally good instructor. Blacksmithing is something I've always wanted to try and the day didn't disappoint. I look forward to booking again in the near future, I've been well and truly bitten by the forge bug!
Richard Williams - - #10748
What an absolutely fantastic day. Aaron is the consummate professional craftsman and educator and is an absolute delight to both watch and be guided by. If you are a maker of any kind or simply enjoy learning new skills, this course is a must for the to-do list. I will be taking what I've learned over the course of the day into my professional life as a prop maker and will certainly hope to return to Steele Avenue one day if only just to watch a master at work.
Many, many thanks and kindest regards to all involved
Martin Mahoney - - #10044
Attended the two day course in May 2017. Being a very practical, hands-on individual I knew I was going to enjoy the course but didn't realise just how much.
The Blacksmith (Aaron) was a master of his craft, providing individual guidance, supervision and encouragement through all the various forging steps, helping you produce works of art that would surprise you.
The forging environment is well equipped and the Peterson family are friendly and welcoming.
If you want to find your creative side and fancy a go at forging, I can't recommend this course enough.
The most enjoyable weekend of productivity I have had in a long time.
Thanks Aaron and I'll be back again. Give your dad my regards.
Vyvyan Fuge - - #9188
Course bought as a Christmas present - the last time I had worked metal in a forge was in the late sixties whilst at school, and had always enjoyed metal work. I looked forward to the course and was not disappointed. Aaron was a great teacher, relaxed and ready to share his love of working with metal. The day passed quickly and efficiently and I was able to produce some decent for me products.
Great day highly recommended.
Nigel Collins - - #8771
The one day blacksmith course was bought as a gift and I thoroughly enjoyed it, I have no experience in this and I managed to come away with some lovely metal work at the end of the day. Aaron Peterson gave very good demonstrations, there was no paperwork and we were straight onto the hands on tools which was great. I would highly recommend this course to anyone as Aaron is very patient and will help you work at your own pace.
kyle - - #7622
I attended Aarons one day taster course found the whole experience educational and entertaining. it's amazing how much you can learn in a day, I went in knowing very little about blacksmithing but left much wiser with a few things that will last forever.
plenty of time with a hammer and anvil using techniques that we learned on the day I look forward to the two day course brilliant brilliant day.
Tony Lewis - - #7398
An inspired Christmas present from my wife. A cold winters day outside but soon warmed up working with the forge. Learnt a huge amount in such a short time - the day flew by. Aaron is a very relaxed, welcoming and knowledgeable teacher who really cares about his craft. Lots of time spent hands-on with tools resulting in some great things to take home and keep. Plenty of hot tea as well. The perfect antidote to the stress of modern life and something I will keep thinking back on for a long time. I would highly recommend it to anyone.
Ian Henley - - #7391
What a great day, funny, interesting. Aaron was great patient, positive and best of all productive. I would highly recommend this course to anyone. Wonderful introduction to working with metal and a great taster for more courses. Thank you.
Sandy Colclough - - #5723
My wife bought a day course for me as a present - she came too :-)
We had a wonderful time. Aaron is really friendly, very knowledgeable and engaging. His love of iron is infectious too. The day flew past and we created items we use at home! We both thoroughly recommend the course.
Gary Doherty - - #5505
An informative and interesting day that leaves you with rich memories. Highly recommended.
Bettina - - #5306
As a family we wanted to do something different...it wasn't just about the connection with something ancient, hot, physical, real it was our blacksmith host Aaron and the magic place they've managed to create. Aaron uses his skills and knowledge of history, metal working and politics to take you on a journey - we created so much more than objects - we forged and renewed friendship. Go, do it connect your head with your hands. Thank you Trudi and Aaron.
Smith Family - - #5090
What a day! Originally bought as a Christmas present for Matt, I soon decided I couldn't pass up the opportunity to have a go, and with Trudi's excellent planning, I was able join just days before the course. I'm so glad I did, and we thoroughly enjoyed! Aaron's knowledge, skills and friendly nature made him the perfect tutor - always on hand if help was needed, but also gave us space to just have a play! I would highly recommend the course - once my family saw the beautiful pieces we'd made, they now can't wait to have a go!
Matt & Jess - - #5008
I did this course with my son and one of my friends. Everything about it was excellent; the admin, the directions and information, the welcome, the teaching, the cameraderie and chatting.. Aaron demonstrated what he wanted us to do, gave us space to have a go but was on hand if we got stuck or made a mistake. He tailored the course to our skill (or lack of it!) level and allowed us to modify the designs to suit our own situations so Graham and Gill made toasting forks with a ram's head handle whilst the stem of my rams head became a handle for the door of my workshop. He was also happy for us to make extra hooks etc. In 'down time' to practice again what we had learned on day one. Despite being a pensioner and female with no experience of metalwork beyond polishing it, I had a great time and came away with several useful pieces which I will be proud to display.
Sue Laverack - - #4403
Wow! What a day. Who wouldn't love the chance to spend a day shoving lengths of metal into a forge and then hammering seven shades of shale of it.
A day full of hammers, metal, fire, and big tools might sound like something only men might like but we both thoroughly enjoyed it (I originally bought it as a Christmas present for Fiona) and came away with artefacts we proudly show off to anybody who is interested, or not.
Day is made perfect by Aaron, a true craftsman, great teacher and homespun philosopher.
Having bored people at work with an account of my day and showing them my artefacts, loads of them now want to do it.
John and Fiona May - - #3656
Echoing other reviews we had a fantastic time with Aaron. We weren't expecting to get hands on so soon, but within minutes of been greeted we were using the blacksmith's tools and forge to produce our first item. Aaron has a wealth of knowledge and experience and puts this to good use to allow you to learn the trade and helps if you need it. Apart from short breaks for tea & lunch this was a really good day's experience and whilst tired from what we'd learnt and the physical nature of blacksmithing left us both wanting to come back and do more. This is a really good value day out!
Pete & Berni - - #3503
I enjoyed excellent tuition from Aarron, his experience in teaching is evident and he was entremly patient, explained in detail and tailored things to my pace.
I learn lots about the art and skills of blacksmithing as well as its role in industrial development and Welsh history. Despite the physical nature of the course and a fair amount of standing, it was relaxing and distracting and a world away from my usual hectic life and demanding job.
I would love to do more perhaps even a bit of welding next!
I am extremely proud of the fire irons I made, and take every opportunity to show them to friends, family and any visitors.
Sian - - #3239
The best birthday present a 50 something woman could have. I had no previous experience, but thanks to Aaron's teaching skills I came away with an armful of useful and beautiful things. Would love to do it again
Sue - - #2169
The one day blacksmith course with Aaron Peterson was a gift from my wife which I thoroughly enjoyed. I would highly recommend it to anyone who would like to experience the thrill of working hot metal with fire and water, and coming away with something that you made with your own hands. Aaron is very knowledgeable in is field, patient and entertaining in his own way. If you want to have a go of an ancient craft and have a great day out, Aaron Peterson of Ferric Fusion is your man.
Matt Robinson - - #1975
I went on the 2 day Blacksmiths beginners course - I thoroughly enjoyed it , Aeron was very friendly , knowledable and experienced , a truly professional set up and I learnt a lot . I would defiantly recommend this course .
Simon Bence - - #1902
This was a really good weekend. From the friendly atmosphere and clear instruction right through to the satisfaction in taking home some real finished products - this course was just what I had hoped it would be. I wasn't as fast as the other folk at some things, but I was never rushed and never felt left behind. That's a good trick in a mixed bunch. I came away with a practical understanding of basic blacksmithing techniques and a new appreciation of old work done by people I'll never meet. All of this is only possible if the instructor has a thorough understanding of the craft and plenty of experience. Aaron has that. Thanks.
Peter Chandler - - #1624
Received this wonderful day as a present from my wife. I was apprehensive as the day approached and not quite sure how I would cope. However there was absolutely nothing to worry about. Aaron is a superb teacher and very patient. He dealt with the difference in abilities within our group with ease and ensured that we were all able to achieve our goals. I was really thrilled and proud of the items that I made and will remember the experience for a long time. Thank you
Jonathan - - #1087
Received the voucher as a present and had a wonderful day playing with metal and learning a lot. Aaron explained the techniques simply and made sure there was lots of hands on work within minutes of starting which was great. He also went on to more advanced stuff and I left with plenty of items as a memento of a fantastic experience. I still can't believe the items I made with Aaron's help as blacksmithing always seemed such a black art...it has inspired me to do some more, so I'll be thinking of some designs now! Strongly recommended for anyone with an interest in metalworking, or even for that someone who seems to have everything as they will be delighted with the whole experience. Thanks again!
Jonatha - - #1074
My husband and I came on a one day course and we both learned a lot from the day. Aaron is an excellent teacher, explaining the principles of blacksmithing, each item that we made enabled us to progress to more complex pieces, building upon the skills as the day progressed.
We came home proud with what we made.
Sarah - - #1043
Absolutely fantastic. I'd not done anything like this since I was at school and the course made me realise how much I enjoyed creating things! Aaron was great taking time to go through the practical demonstrations and watch and help when we had a go. Had a brilliant time can't wait to be able to find a free weekend to further what I learnt - who knows a new career?
Jeremy - - #960
My daughter and I attended this course to extend our craft skill base. This was something most definitely out of our comfort range but within minutes of arriving we were both put at our ease. Aaron tailored the day to our needs and encouraged us to develop our own creative direction. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and would return to extend our skills in a heartbeat.
Michelle Walsh - - #955
My wife bought the 2 day course for me as a present; I already had a fascination with blacksmithing.
Aaron is an excellent teacher! He starts with simple techniques that give you a feel for the processes, which quickly turn into pieces of work where you really feel you have made something significant.
By the second day I was making a piece to a design idea of my own.
I was so pleased with the result that I booked a further day of blacksmithing to continue with the design.
The course was one of the highlights of my year. I strongly recccomend it.
Ian P - - #952
I booked the course not knowing what to expect really, i just fancied trying something totally different. Aaron is a superb craftsman and a really nice genuine guy. Our small group were guided along by Aaron who kept a watchful eye over us helping when it was called for. I really enjoyed the course and would highly recommend it, from the first communication with Trudi when booking and the information as regards hotels nearby which was very helpful and accurate right through till the end of the second day i couldn't fault anything to be honest. Robert Lovett. Wolverhampton. West Midlands.
Robert Lovett - - #942
My wife bought me a weekend course with Aaron of Ferric Fusion. One of the best weekends ever. Aaron is a true craftsman with a wealth of experience and an awesome forge! You get straight to work and its really hands on- learning lots of techniques. Aaron does his utmost to accommodate the varying skill levels in the group- so is suitable for novice to expert. I can't recommend this course highly enough- its brilliant- and Aaron is a lovely guy.....don't hesitate to book.
johnny hillman - - #936
I paid for my son to go on this course as he was thinking of applying for a blacksmithing course and he thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it especially as it was practical and hands on. I loved the present he brought home for me. He then went on to study blacksmithing full time and afterwards gained an apprenticeship in the RAF using the skills he obtained. I can't recommend this course highly enough and the people are very friendly too.
Ann Yeomans - - #935
This was a gift bought for me for my birthday and it was superb. I really cannot stress enough how good it was. You get stuck in pretty much as soon as you are through the door and the two days fly by! Highly Recommend This Course.
Tom - - #934
My wife and I attended this course in 2013. We both thoroughly enjoyed it. No experience is required for the beginners course yet the groups are small enough that significant additional 'stretch' can be provided if desired. A very friendly relaxed feel with plenty of hands on tuition rather than being lectured to. Excellent experience and we intend to do the intermediate course too.
dave rugg - - #933
Something a little out of the ordinary, I loved this course. Everyone was very friendly and easy to get along with. A great introduction to blacksmithing. Thank you!
Alun - - #930
The blacksmith course was a present for my (18yo) son - and he loved it. Aaron took the time in working with him on what he really wanted to make. My husband and I had a lovely relaxing weekend in West Wales at the same time. Trudi was great at sending us all the info - totally recommended!
