About the Course
Due to the popularity of our Blacksmith Experience Days, Viking Knife Classes and Dragon Making classes we have decided to add a special experience day for all the juniors who want to have a go at metalwork. The class is tailored towards 8years+ who come with either Dad or Mum. The options are fairly open and are discussed before attending the class and are designed with the child in mind and their aspirations.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
All equipment is provided , however access to power tools is limited to adults for obvious safety reasons. We have a full selection of hand tools and of course they will be using the hearth for forge-work as well.
Everyone must wear sturdy footwear but we will supply safety goggles, gloves aprons etc. (some items may only be available in adult sizes). We have a selection of smaller hammers and aprons are adjustable to suit most sizes. Of course whatever is made on the day is theirs to take away, the cost is for one parent and one child (180.00 per person).
Tea, coffee and soft drinks are provided as well as biscuits but we don't go to the pub unlike the other courses so please bring a packed lunch (we have a microwave if needed).
What an excellent day. Started the morning making a simple poker and by end walked away with a Sword and a Dragon Claw mount to hang it in. All the guys there were attentive, super friendly and helpful. It really didn't matter who you asked, they were happy to help you move along with whatever it was you were making.
Need to use an angle grinder, here is how to use it safely.
Need to make a curve in that sword, use this tool.
Need to drill something, let me help clamp it down properly and get you started.
My son (12) was just grinning the whole day and when asked at the end just said "Awesome". We came with some ideas for a sword and within reason you got to make what want to your design within the day.
I can strongly recommend this experience day if your son/daughter has any sort of interest in working with metal.

Response from Anvil Forge:Hi Chris
I did the Parent and Child blacksmithing day in January 2018. It was so much fun! The instructors at the forge were so lovely, and they really helped me and my dad to make something wonderful. When we went we had an idea of making a garden obelisk, with a few leaves, caterpillars, and maybe a large leaf on top to act as a bird bath/feeder. What we came out with surpassed all of our expectations. It had leaves, a butterfly, snails, a spider and web, a dragonfly, mushrooms, creepers, and the large leaf on top! We’re so pleased with it and it now takes pride of place in front of our kitchen window.
It’s lovely as well because on the day-courses, there’s no need to worry about having to take a packed lunch. On the Parent and Child course, the forge provides a delicious picnic lunch, and on the adult courses you are taken down to the local pub.
I should mention too, that in September/October last year I did a home-education course of three hours each Friday for five weeks, in which I made: a poker, a snail sitting on a leaf and stalk, a heart spoon, a chess set and more! All my experiences at the forge have been great fun and I’ve always felt welcome.
