Description:

If you've ever watched a blacksmithing demonstration and thought you'd like to find out for yourself what it's like to be a blacksmith, I, Lucille, am here to open the forge door and welcome you into the fascinating world of blacksmithing. I have many years teaching experience in Design and Technology and have now forged a new creative path developing my own artistic skills and teaching beginners blacksmithing in my workshop. The blacksmith experience days are based around using both traditional and modern techniques to make a wide range of projects based on your, the student wishes, this could be sculptural or practical. As you may suspect, working with hot metal is a labour intensive process, so numbers on this taster day are limited to a maximum of four. That means I have plenty of time to offer one-to-one help and tuition to each blacksmith, so everyone finishes the day having learnt a lot about this amazing craft and proudly clutching a superbly forged creation they have made.
The courses are run from Little Duck Forge in Eastney, Portsmouth PO4 9JF.

In general the day loosely follows the following timetable:

9.30-9.45 Welcome and site orientation, e.g. where the toilets are, followed by house rules (don't worry they are not very onerous)

9.45 – 11.15 Making a beam hook. Lucille demonstrates in stages so you get ‘hands on’ as soon as possible.

11.15 – 11.45 Tea break plus discuss main projects for the day, draw up designs to scale.

11.45 – 1pm Start on main project

1pm – 1.30 Lunch - bring your own packed lunch. (Microwave available)

1.30- 5ish Continue work on main project until finished, tea breaks etc. as required although the fires tend to need a break around 3.30

Please be aware some days can over run! (Please do not book something early in the evening or make sure I know about your plans before the project is planned at the beginning of the day.)

What's included in the price?

• The chance to design and create your own unique item, such as a poker, garden sculpture, hand tool etc.
• Tuition to learn key blacksmithing and forge techniques such as lighting and maintaining the fire, tapering, bending, twisting, hot cutting, punching, upsetting and riveting
• Refreshments (Tea, coffee and whatever happens to be at hand)
• Materials and fuel
• Encouragement to succeed and lots of smiles
Please note I do not cover knives, axes, swords etc.

Had a great day with Lucille and the day flew by. So happy I didn't reschedule! The class size is perfect as you're never waiting to ask a question or ask for help. Already convinced my dad to come a give it a go.

Fun and enjoyable day. Lucille is a patient teacher and provides inspiration and support to help you achieve results at the end of the day. It was a great day out learning new skills and putting them into practise. I definitely hope to be able to go again in the future.

A superb day. We were taught the basics and then made our own creations with expert supervision. Lucille is a talented lady who has a flair for design and a thorough knowledge of the blacksmith's craft. She is both patient and practical.
This makes an excellent present that you will not forget. An excellent day, thoroughly recommended.

A superb course; hands on from the start and the free reign of the work shops to create any 'blacksmithing creation'. Lucile has a wealth of knowledge and a friendly attitude towards all abilities. Will definitely be booking again!

My husband had a fantastic day and came home having made something quite beautiful. Thank you

I have done 2 of these 1 day courses with Lucille, and enjoyed them hughly, bringing back some long forgotten skills. Great teacher and very knowledgeable about how to translate your ideas into a tangible product by the end of the day. I now have 2 splendid bits of garden ornamentation, a Sea horse and an octopus.
Highly recommended!

A great day working with a very talented blacksmith and a pleasant atmosphere to work in. I took my husband there for Valentine's Day and we made an intricate side table. Lucille was more than helpful and guided us the whole way from start to finish. A very thorough and illustrative class and we both had lots of fun.
Hopefully we will go again soon with another project in mind.

What a great day we had, Lucille helped us take huge steps forward on our first day. The two to one ratio is perfect. We achieved our personal goals and now I have a huge ornamental spider to enhance my garden. Will certainly be back for more!

I attended the course with lucille, I had a great time and enjoyed every minute of the experience. Lucille is very skilled, patient (which was great as I was sooo slow) and a pleasure to work with. I enjoyed the blacksmithing experience so much that I am planning to go back and do it again.

I have attended two workshop days with Lucille and on both occasions have thoroughly enjoyed myself. Working with red hot steel, shaping and encouraging it to the form you want is an amazing experience. Lucille's teaching style is fun, professional and inspiring. Her enthusiasm for her medium shines through; it is a real passion and very infectious!

Excellent teaching. I learnt so much. No matter what level of practical skills you bring to the day, Lucille will assess exactly what you need to keep you busy and productive.
Her artistic skills and keen eye are as acute as her practical abilities.
A really fun day, in an interesting working forge, in capable hands. And you get to keep the result!
Highly recommended. A perfect gift for someone who has everything. They won't forget this. Neither will you!

Attended a taster day this weekend with a couple of friends, to say it was an amazing day is an understatement, I am still grinning like a Cheshire Cat! I'm so pleased with the fruits of my labour after one day. I definitely want to do it again & would absolutely recommend it. Lucille makes you feel so at ease & welcome. Go on give it a try you won't be disappointed!

Blacksmithing is one of those elemental things deserving of anyone's bucket list. Whether you want a one-off experience of an essential human skill, or are considering something more long-term, Lucille has the skills, knowledge and understanding to provide a user-friendly day with something worthwhile to take home into the bargain. Fantastic value too.

-

Attended the course with Lucille and completely surprised my husband, and myself, by coming home with a poker! Lucille is very patient, knowledgeable and extremely easy to work with. I found her teaching method fantastic and aim to spend at least another day with her shortly. This is definitely a course for everyone to try.
