About the Course
Ideal for the beginner, this one day course is six hours in duration and aimed at adults aged sixteen years and over. It provides a full introduction to pyrography - "the art of designing with fire" which involves using a heated implement to burn designs on natural materials such as wood and leather.
Designed to be informative as well as practical, the day commences with a look at the historical aspect of pyrography. A thorough discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of various types of modern electric machines follows, together with advice on suitable surface materials. Each student has the use of a machine and the focus is on wood and leather.
The morning is spent learning how to handle the pen and investigating a variety of shading techniques. Utilising the knowledge acquired, students then go on to create their own unique wooden coaster sampler. Guidance on transferring a design, as well as advice on lettering and drawing a pencil guideline directly on to the surface, enables students to produce several more completed projects in wood and leather to take home.
Your tutor, Lincolnshire pyrography artist Susan Robey, has an extensive knowledge of the subject having specialised in the medium for over thirty years. Her aim is to guide, inspire and bring out the creative side in everyone. Enjoy learning and developing at your own pace in a relaxed environment at Susan's studio in the beautiful rural county of Lincolnshire.
Quality tuition is guaranteed with a maximum of three students on any course.
Artistic ability is not essential as a choice of designs and resources are made available.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above or telephone us. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

I signed up my wife and I for Susan's workshop as a surprise birthday activity for my wife. We had both never done any pyrography before (prior to the workshop), and I thought that it would be interesting to learn something new. We do not regret it the slightest: The workshop was very well-planned and informative, took place in a very cosy and relaxing environment (Susan's home-based studio), and it went at a very comfortable and manageable pace. Susan has structured her workshop in a way that by the end of the workshop, you would have had the opportunity to try out several pyrography techniques, and experimented with pyrography on both wood and leather.
My wife and I both worked at different paces, and it was good to note that Susan's workshop was able to accommodate our different paces of learning extremely easily. My wife worked more quickly than me, for example, and Susan was happy to let her try out new skills and media.
Both my wife and I are unable to draw anything decent to save our lives, and were initially concerned that we would not be able to benefit fully from the workshop. Surprisingly though, we managed pretty well! We focussed more on creating simple and complex patterns and symbols, and the results were really nice (we think so, anyway). Susan showed us several examples, though, of animals and natural objects drawn using pyrography techniques. Not a level that my wife and I can attain yet, I'm afraid!
Susan was extremely patient and so willing to share her wealth of experience and knowledge, and we had a wonderful time at her workshop! We were unable to attend the workshop on the original dates (on the website), but Susan was accommodating enough to arrange a separate session for us to fit our schedule. Susan replied all our emails very quickly, and that was a very big plus for us: it made communication and arrangements a lot smoother.
My wife and I live in London and do not drive, but instead came up to Lincoln by train. Susan's workshop starts in the morning and takes up a full day, and so what my wife and I did was to take the train to Lincoln one day before (and enjoyed exploring the city centre), and put up at a local B&B for a night (we stayed at the Loudor B&B opposite the Forum). Susan's workshop area is actually closer to North Hykeham station, but we felt there would be more to do in Lincoln. This is a matter of preference though. Either way, there are a number of buses (that also thankfully run regularly) that will take you to Susan's workshop location.
All in all, this has been a great workshop to attend, and we had a lovely time spending the day with Susan. We would highly recommend this workshop to anyone who are keen to learn pyrography, or simply to dabble in something new.

As beginners to pyrography we found this day to be invaluable in understanding the basics and getting enough hands-on experience for a running start. The course was well planned and carefully prepared to make the best use of the time available.
Not only did we have fun, we also came away informed and inspired!

Fantastic course. Susan was extremely well organised and a brilliant teacher. She talked us through each project, and through the various equipment and encouraged us to use our own creative skills early on. I've just bought a Peter Child's pen and have been very inspired by Susan to take Pyrography up as a new hobby! Highly recommended. Thanks Susan

I had been thinking of doing Pyrography for quite some time, however, I am no artist and had no knowledge of this wonderful craft. The course was full of detail and gave me a great insight into different techniques, equipment and confidence in my ability. It was a thoroughly enjoyable day. Susan is great, very knowledgeable and encouraging. I would definitely recommend the course to any one thinking of doing pyrography!

I feel that the wood burning course might be compared with burning wood logs on an open fire. It was warm and comforting. it commandeered ones full attention, it exercised ones imagination (with faces in the fire), but all without any spitting, sparks or, the resultant ash: Pity it's not possible to dispose of used tissues.5
So thank you and best wishes.

Had a great day and learnt a lot in a relaxed atmosphere. Susan is knowledgeable and passes on her expertise in an easy to understand manner. I have no artistic ability and was a little worried about some of the techniques we were going to practice, but Susan made them easy to achieve. I have already ordered the same pyrography machine as we used on the course. Would recommend Susan's courses to anyone who thinks this may be for them.

Excellent course to give me a hands on insight into pyrography, perfectly pitched for a complete beginner. Learnt some basic techniques which has given me the confidence to get going. Very helpful guide to the different machines and how to make and care for nibs. Useful info re. Wood types and health and safety. Susan is a very friendly, informative and inspiring tutor had a great day ... could easily have stayed longer.

An Excellent course. I have been doing pyrography for about 2 months but wanted to learn more techniques. Susan certainly provided that and also gave me many hints and tips for me to progress my pyrography hobby. My main aims for the course were to understand shading, choose the correct wood and how to finish my projects (varnish, wax etc), these goals were achieved and I feel more confident in my hobby.
