About the Course
Ideal for the beginner, this one day course is six hours in duration and aimed at adults aged sixteen years and over. It provides a full introduction to pyrography - "the art of designing with fire" which involves using a heated implement to burn designs on natural materials such as wood and leather.
Artistic ability is not a requirement to get the most from this course as a choice of designs and resources are made available throughout.
Designed to be informative as well as practical, the day commences with a look at the historical aspect of pyrography. A thorough discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of various types of modern electric machines follows, together with advice on suitable surface materials. Each student has the use of a machine and the focus is on wood and leather.
The morning is spent learning how to handle the pen and investigating a variety of shading techniques. Utilising the knowledge acquired, students then go on to create their own unique wooden sampler. Guidance on transferring a design, as well as advice on lettering and drawing a pencil guideline directly on to the surface, enables students to produce several more completed projects in wood and leather to take home.
Your tutor, Lincolnshire pyrography artist Susan Robey, has an extensive knowledge of the subject having specialised in the medium for over thirty years. Her aim is to guide, inspire and bring out the creative side in everyone. Enjoy learning and developing at your own pace in a relaxed environment at Susan's studio in the beautiful rural county of Lincolnshire.
Quality tuition is guaranteed with a maximum of three students on any course.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
Cost includes tuition, use of equipment, materials, resources and unlimited refreshments in the form of tea, coffee, soft drinks, biscuits etc throughout the day (excepting lunch which is to be provided by the student).
Price is per person in a group of 2-3 students. Susan is also happy to arrange alternative mutually convenient dates for couples who wish to attend together for a total cost of £170.00. If you prefer to attend on an individual one-to-one basis this can also be arranged at a cost of £130.00 for the full six hour day.
Please get in touch for more details and to book your place.
Exactly what we (my wife also attended) required. A good practical session with a brief history of art of pyrography. Susan provided copious amounts of information and techniques, including how to create new stylii, choosing the correct woods and how to finish projects. The ability to easily use real leather was a very welcome surprise.
Course is well pitched for the beginner and Susan provides a friendly atmosphere in which to learn.

The course was very informative, with the opportunity to try out the techniques with help and guidance if required. A relaxing yet a great experience to learn from someone who has so much experience.
I thoroughly enjoyed the day and would recommend to others, Thank you.

Sue is an excellent teacher, very passionate and knowledgeable on her subject.
The course was well organised, had the relevant material, and I went home with a finished item.... Result
The day had humour, was relaxing and I would highly recommend Sue's pyography course

I was given the course as a present but was unable to attend any given dates. Susan arranged a date to suit me, which was appreciated.
There were two of us, both beginners. I had not attempted pyrography before and was nervous about making mistakes. Susan gave a short PowerPoint presentation which was informative, interesting and, since we were encouraged to ask questions, it was an excellent ice breaker and introduction.
The initial practise lines were wonky and had blobs at both ends! However, with explanation and encouragement we were both able to complete out first sampler square. I was hooked! I had previously created Zentangle patterns using a pencil and found that this really helped, both with skill and confidence.
We experimented with two types of wood and two types of leather and I was pleased with the items I took home.
Susan is an excellent, patient teacher and is happy to explain several times if the student doesn't grasp something the first (or second!) time.
The course was relaxing but the time flew. I have learnt enough to make me confident to buy a machine and use it without further tuition.
I would return to Susan for further instruction when I have practised what I have learnt so far.
I highly recommend the course.

Very good day. Susan is very talented and it was a great day with a lot learnt. As I'm a beginner I was worried I would be out of my depth, but Susan really helped me come on a lot.

This one day course, run by Susan, was a very enjoyable and useful introduction to pyrography.
She was able to tailor both speed and content so both my wife and I were able to progress nicely at our own pace, concentrating on wood, for me, and leather for Kate. The instruction was very well paced and delivered; we both achieved a lot in the day and we now have a solid foundation for progressing further.

A beginner and totally new to pyrography I found this course well paced, informative but strangely (considering how much we achieved) relaxing!!
Along with clear instructions Susan passed on many tips/pointers and allowed us to move at our own pace through use of equipment, materials, etc. We accomplished a lot over a very enjoyable day.

As a complete beginner and a person who does not consider themselves to be at all artistic, I thoroughly enjoyed the recent course I attended with Susan. She provided not only all the equipment needed to get going straight away, but created an environment where I felt comfortable to play around with the techniques and explore my creative ideas at my own pace and importantly without judgement. The experience has definitely sparked a desire for me to explore this subject further.
I would recommend the course to anyone, no matter how well hidden you believe your artistic talents, as I am sure Susan will help bring them out into daylight!

A great course and excellent value for money. Susan clearly knows what she is taking about and gave plenty of time to complete the exercises without rushing. My confidence has had a huge boost as a result of spending the day with her. She mentions she also runs other courses but at no time did I feel any pressure to complete further training (this has not always been the case on some courses). I will without a doubt attend another course with her as Susan's passion for Pyrography clearly shines through.
Caroline Mitchell - - #19207
A very informative day which was ‘value for money’. Susan had structured her course so that it was flexible to the needs of the student and delivered it in a way that the skills needed were delivered in a simplistic manner. I fully recommend this course and Susan for anyone who has an interest in this craft / art.
Peter Hedley - - #16484
Had a brilliant day with excellent company. I learned about the history of pyrography and the modern equipment available to practice this engaging craft. The course was well paced, with Susan gently pushing us on. The opportunity to work on different surfaces was much appreciated. Susan has a collection of stimulating resources to work from, so no worries. I got everything I was hoping from the course, and feel set to go ahead and purchase my own kit.
Wholeheartedly recommend this course.

An excellent course that was delivered in a friendly and professional manner. Susan created a relaxed environment in which to impart her knowledge on pyrography. It was the first time that I've ever done pyrography and Susan was encouraging throughout and set achievable goals. Thank you.

I just wanted to say a huge “Thank You” for your time and patience on your Pyrography Beginners Course. With no previous experience whatsoever, I found it a thoroughly enjoyable and enlightening day. From the insight into the history of Pyrography, through to the practical hands on sessions trying to grasp the basic skills, I thought it was excellent; the time went so quickly.
My only concern now, is trying to pry myself away from trying to develop my pyrography skills on my daughter’s wedding project, in order to prevent my garden from becoming a jungle. I just know I will be engrossed.
Thanks again for a great day; it was well worth the trip and would not hesitate to recommend your course for anyone thinking of taking up the hobby.
Kevin Goodenough - - #15713
This is an excellent course. Neither of us had any particular artistic flare but Susan bought it out of us as we went through the course. This was our first time doing pyrography and Susan provided all the tips and techniques needed to get us started. Set in a relax environment you work at your own pace. Susan is really informative and so friendly we had such a god day.
Matt & Gemma Turvey - - #14956
Susan's Pyrography course was well thought out and well equipped. She has a very relaxed way of getting her craft and her skill over to her students. The course itself was both interesting and informative. I can't draw or very arty but Susan gave me the skills and confidence to take up this amazing hobby that I have wanted to do for a very long time.
Julian Clappison - - #12592
I thoroughly enjoyed this course. It was excellent for a complete beginner like me. I learnt so much and I am now eager to buy my own pyrography machine and start creating!
Susan was very knowledgeable and encouraging.
A big thank you!

Very professionally run, but still enjoyable. Learnt loads and made some lovely items. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to give pyrography a go. Brilliant

I signed up my wife and I for Susan's workshop as a surprise birthday activity for my wife. We had both never done any pyrography before (prior to the workshop), and I thought that it would be interesting to learn something new. We do not regret it the slightest: The workshop was very well-planned and informative, took place in a very cosy and relaxing environment (Susan's home-based studio), and it went at a very comfortable and manageable pace. Susan has structured her workshop in a way that by the end of the workshop, you would have had the opportunity to try out several pyrography techniques, and experimented with pyrography on both wood and leather.
My wife and I both worked at different paces, and it was good to note that Susan's workshop was able to accommodate our different paces of learning extremely easily. My wife worked more quickly than me, for example, and Susan was happy to let her try out new skills and media.
Both my wife and I are unable to draw anything decent to save our lives, and were initially concerned that we would not be able to benefit fully from the workshop. Surprisingly though, we managed pretty well! We focussed more on creating simple and complex patterns and symbols, and the results were really nice (we think so, anyway). Susan showed us several examples, though, of animals and natural objects drawn using pyrography techniques. Not a level that my wife and I can attain yet, I'm afraid!
Susan was extremely patient and so willing to share her wealth of experience and knowledge, and we had a wonderful time at her workshop! We were unable to attend the workshop on the original dates (on the website), but Susan was accommodating enough to arrange a separate session for us to fit our schedule. Susan replied all our emails very quickly, and that was a very big plus for us: it made communication and arrangements a lot smoother.
My wife and I live in London and do not drive, but instead came up to Lincoln by train. Susan's workshop starts in the morning and takes up a full day, and so what my wife and I did was to take the train to Lincoln one day before (and enjoyed exploring the city centre), and put up at a local B&B for a night (we stayed at the Loudor B&B opposite the Forum). Susan's workshop area is actually closer to North Hykeham station, but we felt there would be more to do in Lincoln. This is a matter of preference though. Either way, there are a number of buses (that also thankfully run regularly) that will take you to Susan's workshop location.
All in all, this has been a great workshop to attend, and we had a lovely time spending the day with Susan. We would highly recommend this workshop to anyone who are keen to learn pyrography, or simply to dabble in something new.

As beginners to pyrography we found this day to be invaluable in understanding the basics and getting enough hands-on experience for a running start. The course was well planned and carefully prepared to make the best use of the time available.
Not only did we have fun, we also came away informed and inspired!

Amazing, amazing, amazing training! can recommend to all!

Fantastic course. Susan was extremely well organised and a brilliant teacher. She talked us through each project, and through the various equipment and encouraged us to use our own creative skills early on. I've just bought a Peter Child's pen and have been very inspired by Susan to take Pyrography up as a new hobby! Highly recommended. Thanks Susan

I had been thinking of doing Pyrography for quite some time, however, I am no artist and had no knowledge of this wonderful craft. The course was full of detail and gave me a great insight into different techniques, equipment and confidence in my ability. It was a thoroughly enjoyable day. Susan is great, very knowledgeable and encouraging. I would definitely recommend the course to any one thinking of doing pyrography!
Zoe Woods - - #10993
I feel that the wood burning course might be compared with burning wood logs on an open fire. It was warm and comforting. it commandeered ones full attention, it exercised ones imagination (with faces in the fire), but all without any spitting, sparks or, the resultant ash: Pity it's not possible to dispose of used tissues.5
So thank you and best wishes.
Alan James - - #10517
Really enjoyable day. Very well presented, with plenty of hands on activities.
Beginner pyrography - - #9800
Had a great day and learnt a lot in a relaxed atmosphere. Susan is knowledgeable and passes on her expertise in an easy to understand manner. I have no artistic ability and was a little worried about some of the techniques we were going to practice, but Susan made them easy to achieve. I have already ordered the same pyrography machine as we used on the course. Would recommend Susan's courses to anyone who thinks this may be for them.
Alan Squires - - #8762
Excellent course to give me a hands on insight into pyrography, perfectly pitched for a complete beginner. Learnt some basic techniques which has given me the confidence to get going. Very helpful guide to the different machines and how to make and care for nibs. Useful info re. Wood types and health and safety. Susan is a very friendly, informative and inspiring tutor had a great day ... could easily have stayed longer.
Linda Moore - - #8656
An Excellent course. I have been doing pyrography for about 2 months but wanted to learn more techniques. Susan certainly provided that and also gave me many hints and tips for me to progress my pyrography hobby. My main aims for the course were to understand shading, choose the correct wood and how to finish my projects (varnish, wax etc), these goals were achieved and I feel more confident in my hobby.
