About the Course

Our 2020 workshop programme at Cowshed Creative is now on OUR website (purple tab above) with full details and info on how to book.

A day of jewellery-making, nothing beats it! If you love texture and surface pattern, this one is for you. Expect to make pendants or earrings that are tactile and unique as every pass through the rolling mill is different, and every hammer blow brings exciting changes to your piece. Using hammers and a rolling mill, we’ll explore the impact and creativity of “low tech” tools on sterling silver. A practical, hand-made approach far removed from computer aided design and mass production.

Focusing on a small range of specific techniques, the workshop is designed to explore textural possibilities, develop your basic skills and encouraging you to create your own texture-based designs.

Jo Dix is a designer-maker based in Milnthorpe where she has a retail shop and workshop. Qualified as a secondary school teacher in the mists of time, Jo has made jewellery for 20 years, and made it her career 15 years ago when she moved to Cumbria. Jo works predominantly in silver and gold, although she also creates fused glass jewellery when she has time. Most of her business is commission based, but being passionate about learning and sharing her knowledge, it is no surprise that she has also been teaching jewellery making since 2005 and is an inspirational teacher.

This workshop will be at Cowshed Creative, based in a converted Lakeland barn on our traditional family Farm. The art studio is a stunning open plan space with plenty of room to wander outside and take inspiration from the amazing Lakeland landscape and environment of the peaceful Kentmere valley. Make it a special break and stay in one of our luxury camping pods on the farm. Check out our website for details.

All our tutors are carefully selected professionals and experts with extensive teaching experience. Whilst this is a relatively new venture, George, who has set up Cowshed Creative, has many years of experience programming and running creative courses at the Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal and for Cumbria Adult Education.
