This is a great course for those of you wanting to learn loads in two days. An intensive weekend being taken through tools, timber and techniques. Resulting in a functional piece of furniture. You will design and build you own hedge chair from scratch. We only use timber from our neighbouring woodlands, sustainably managed and in community ownership. We cater for absolute beginners to more accomplished makers wanting to learn more about greenwood techniques and construction. Special group days and weekends can be arranged. See website for more images and info. Hope to see you along on one of our award winning courses.
What's included in the price?
All tools and materials are included, bring your own lunch, working clothes and creative spirit !
We ask all participants to bring lunch, warm working clothes and strong sensible footwear. We gather up at 9.30 for a cuppa, meet the others and get started by 10, working through til about 5. If you need suggestions for accommodation please get in touch.
Its hard to say just how amazing the Hedge Chair course was; I really didn't know what to expect but having seen the workshop when visiting the shop, I just knew I had to do it. The tuition was so careful and personally focussed - Eoin and Gail are very special teachers - and the general atmosphere of creativity and joy in making, was truly inspiring, I learned so much, so quickly. Also, the weather was as promised, spectacular! To take home a real chair after two days - having started with just a big log, was so satisfying. Now, I can't wait to come back. I think you might have started something! Thanks Barbara
Since attending my first green wood course in April I have returned 3 times. I am hooked! My knowledge has increased as has my skill base under the tuition of Gail, Eoin & Dave. I have been impressed by the encouragement received &, as a result, now have my own shave horse & a wee workshop. None of this would have come to fruition without the patience of the Big Tree 'guys'. This, coupled with their unique brand of humour creates a perfect working/ learning environment.
Absolutely brilliant weekend. Learnt so much and had a cracking time with Eoin and Gail (the instructors/tutors) and the rest of the students. Plus, I got to take home a chair that I made, from scratch. Our creativity was allowed to run riot and even though we made chairs the same way, all four of us went home with very different, but functional chairs. I'm still a bit in awe that I did it, a testament to the exchange of skills and knowledge from Eoin and Gail - it is very much a hands on course, and is full on, but worth every blister.
What a great weekend. Being used to kiln dried wood turning, this was a completely new and worthwhile experience for me. I learned more about wood working over a couple of days than I have in the last couple of years. Working with green wood and learning to use the tools from scratch was a fantastic opportunity and great value for money. I didn't think prior to taking the course that I would have achieved so much over a couple of days. A massive thanks to Eoin, Gail and Dave for all of their efforts and particularly for the social aspect of the course which was first class. Now looking to book another course. Cheers.
had a wonderful day, working in great space and company.the confidence and knowledge of leaders was so helpful. when you think things are going wrong there, help was great advice soon blew away any doubt.such great day looking forward to another course.
I wasn't quite sure what I was getting into when my partner bought me a chair making weekend - but I thoroughly enjoyed myself and have a chair made by myself out of a pile of logs and with minimal use of modern machines. A special bonus for me was to find out that the Borders tradition of community woodlands is still alive and well. Tim Stead would be proud of the work that is continuing in this beautiful part of Scotland.
A first class introduction to working with green wood delivered in a friendly, informative manner which could be understood by someone like me who was only vaguely familiar with the tools & terminology. I have a fabulous chair, made by Me,of which I am extremely proud. All credit & thanks to the team delivering the course & to my fellow attendees who were excellent company. Have already booked next venture!
The learning experience was ensured by the skill of the explanations and assistance, and for me the balance of supervision and letting get on with the job was well judged. The other students were good company and great all round start to green wood working.
Thinking of the next box: despite all the possibilities of a different outcome, I still have 5 functioning digits on each hand and foot!
