Immerse yourself in the three dimensional world of pyrography, "the art of designing with fire", on this themed full day workshop aimed at adults aged sixteen and over. Structured to be suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some knowledge and experience, it is also an ideal follow up to Susan's one day introductory pyrography course.
Artistic ability is not a requirement to get the most from this course as a choice of designs and resources are made available throughout.
Although many different natural surfaces can be used for pyrography, it is traditionally known as "the art of woodburning" and wood will be your canvas. Working on the curved surface of a turned wooden item with a hot wire pen presents a unique challenge. Over the course of the day you will learn all the tips and techniques as well as how to convey texture in a three dimensional way. Experiment with a range of suitable colouring mediums and acquire knowledge of two different methods of applying them to enhance monochrome shading.
The day commences with a thorough review of the techniques involved in pyrography with each student having the use of a machine. Textured designs and patterns worked on a flat circular slice of solid wood will prepare the student for the main three dimensional project. There will be something to suit all abilities and taste with a choice of designs and resources available for the non-artistic.
Receive personal guidance on creating your own "egg-ceptional" piece on a turned wooden egg, such as Susan's Emperor penguin design featured in her step-by-step article of Fox Chapel Publishing's Pyrography 2018 magazine. Decorative borders, patterns and/or lettering are other possibilities and there will be a variety of turned blanks made available on which to work your chosen design. By the end of the day each student will have two or more completed pieces to take home.
Your tutor, Lincolnshire pyrography artist Susan Robey, has an extensive knowledge of the subject having specialised in the medium for over thirty years. Her aim is to guide, inspire and bring out the creative side in everyone. Enjoy learning and developing at your own pace in a relaxed environment at Susan's studio in the beautiful rural county of Lincolnshire.
Quality tuition is guaranteed with a maximum of three students on any course.

This course was bought for me as a gift as I have enjoyed pyrography in the past .
Susan taught many new skills and techniques that I had not used before. I enjoyed learning about using colour and working in 3D .
Susan is very generous at sharing her knowledge of the subject and is also a very good host.
I would definitely recommend this course to both beginners and those with some knowledge.
Susan is very knowledgeable on the history of pyrography and it made a very interesting start to the day. I came away from the course with a lot of new ideas and techniques to try. The day passed very quickly with a successful egg made...... very different to working on a flat surface. I would recommend this course to people who want to further their knowledge of pyrography.
I received the course as a birthday gift, I had been practicing pyrography for more than 6 months, so not a beginner but certainly no expert! Susan took this into account and tailored the course to fit my needs. The course was well structured and interesting, building on the skills I had. The course has opened my eyes to the diversity of pyrography, media, 3D and colour. I have more confidence and knowledge to be creative. Would highly recommend the course for those wanting to learn more.
I did the first course with Susan and was keen to do this one too. Pyrography on a flat piece is similar to ‘drawing’ but when working on 3d there are others aspects which need to be considered. The opportunity to add subtle colour also enhances the results. Would recommend.
