"Bought this experience as a gift for my dad. We had a great time forging a coat hook and axe with Tom. He’s friendly and very knowledgeable on all things blacksmithing. Looking forward to doing lots of chopping with my new axe! Highly recommended.
If you book this course over winter do bring a coat, it’s pretty chilly in the workshop when the forge isn’t on!"
"Fantastic all round.
Full on sensory experience - heat, sound, smell , feel and the other one.
Tom is a super laid back lovely fella and was so encouraging.
We made a brilliant sculpture.
I'm totally hooked and will go again."
"Absolutely superb day yesterday on this introductory course. Tom’s energy and enthusiasm is infectious and, combined with his knowledge (and good-humoured patience!) made for a really enjoyable and educational experience. Tom explained and demonstrated the use of the forge, tools and materials clearly and effectively - he made it look so easy… He provided a glimpse of this highly skilled and demanding craft, gently guiding the creation of some really pleasing pieces of ironwork Despite my general lack of coordination! . I really can’t recommend Tom, or this course too highly. "
"It's rare to get exactly what you hoped for. Tom's Axe making for the three of us was just that. It was a great day at the forge.
More than anything it was Tom himself that made the day, knowledgeable, enthusiastic in his craft and good company. I would not hesitate to recommend any of his courses! "
"I had a great day with Tom,
He was very helpful and understanding,
He is also very professional and has a very good knowledge of metalworking,
I am very happy with the results of my time at the forge,
I will happily recommend this course to anyone who is interested in doing this course.
"This experience was a gift for me so I turned up with no idea what to expect. In a very short time we were forging hooks and leaves and toasting forks from red-hot metal. A great teacher who allowed us to work at our pace, by the end of the day we had tried a number of techniques and had the results to take home with us. I would thoroughly recommend Tom's courses. "
"The course was really amazing and definitely met our expectations! I did the course with my sister, and Tom made the experience engaging for both of us at the same time, alternating on practicing our blacksmithing skills. He provided really clear instructions and advised us through the whole day, making the different pieces. He was always happy to answer additional questions about the experience, tools, techniques and more, and it was really pleasant to chat while learning about the arts of blacksmithing.
The knife making part was really interesting and we got to shape it the way we felt, also shaping the wooden handle in which the blade was fit. The whole process was amazing and Tom really made the experience engaging and fun!
We left the day delighted and with each our own arrowhead, leaf keyring forged in the morning, and our knife made in the afternoon. I would definitely recommend!
"Tom was totally amazing, he made the day perfect going over and above to help us achieve our ambitious projects. Tom’s experience and enthusiasm for his passion shone through and he has a great collection of handy tools to make some of the jobs easier. There’s no escaping it though, plenty of bashing bits of metal on a huge anvil was very satisfying! Tom is very talented indeed but he doesn’t overshadow what you do, a fabulous combination of talent and skill makes this day brilliant. Fulfil your curiosity and go on this course, you won’t regret it "
"Amazing day learning how to work metal into beautiful and useful items, Tom was incredibly respectful throughout and really awesome at showing each step and even repeating the step if needed, he is also a blast tho have a conversation with and was very good at explaining the different types of metal used for different types of metalwork, all in all I will most certainly go again to make some more amazing items, a big thank you to Tom "
"I booked this introductory course for my son Henry and I as a day off activity and because Henry really liked the idea of trying his hand at a bit of blacksmithing. It was a really great day out in the forge and Henry came back absolutely buzzing and wanting more. Tom the blacksmith is a great guy, very patient and skilled in making it all look simple but not intimidating to replicate what he does. There were just the 3 of us in the forge for the full day so we had basically 1 to 1 tuition and we made a couple of items each. The whole set up is really relaxed, easy going and you will be hands on from the very start. Be warned, it can be quite physical at times but that really is part of the fun. There was no pressure to rush so we were able to take our time and get into the zone. The whole experience is surprisingly cathartic once you get into the rhythm of the work. I have done a little work like this before and Henry was a complete novice but it didn't matter, we worked steadily under Tom's guidance and we produced some really lovely pieces which now have pride of place in the house.
If you have never tried this art, I thoroughly recommend having a go and I think you would be hard pushed to find a better place to start than with Tom Robinson. We are already planning our next day with him and looking forward to developing our skills."
Tom Robinson Metalwork responded:
" Thank you for your review Stuart. So pleased that you enjoyed the course and you are very welcome back any time!"
