I attended a one-day screen printing session with Kathryn in mid-October 2019 while on a short visit to the UK from Australia. I had previously done some fairly basic stencilling/ fabric printing at home and had a vague memory of doing some thermal screen printing 20+ years ago at school and wanted the opportunity to explore, experiment and learn from a professional textiles artist at my own pace… along with the exciting chance to spend some time in a working studio! I had an absolutely brilliant time… Kathryn taught me the basic process of screen printing while customising the session as we went along to suit what I wanted to learn and understand more about. She was wonderfully friendly, easy going, flexible, and knowledgable - and I was able to ask as many questions as I wanted (which is a privilege that one generally has to go without in larger class scenarios!). Kathryn communicated really thoroughly with me before the session to ensure that the session met my expectations, which included ensuring the availability of specific types of fabric for the class. Afterwards, she also provided some additional notes and recommendations to assist me to continue experimenting on my own at home. I was really proud of the work I produced under her expert guidance - her input gave me the confidence to trust my instincts and go with my gut. Overall, it was a fantastic experience that I would recommend to anyone interested in screen or fabric printing and textiles more broadly.
Response from Kathryn Green Textiles:It was a pleasure to teach you Tamara. We had an incredibly productive and enjoyable day and you achieved some lovely samples. Trust your instincts and don't be afraid to make mistakes! I hope you are able to carry on experimenting now you are back home.
An amazing way to spend a day! The workshop designed for me by Kathryn introduced me to lots of new techniques such as shibori, screen printing, breakdown printing and mono printing. She guided the session in response to my own interests and starting points with lots of opportunity to discuss my own artistic practice in a reflective and supportive way.
Kathryn is a natural teacher who is full of positive energy. It was a real treat to learn and explore textiles with and alongside Kathryn in her own studio environment.
Bought originally for my granddaughter as a present, but the course looked so interesting that both myself and my daughter booked on to the course as well. We all had a fab day, Katherine was very knowledgeable and shared her knowledge generously, not only on the day but with comprehensive notes to take home. I would highly recommend Katherine as a tutor and because the course is tailored to your requirements, all the information and practical aspects are targeted at exactly the right level. Excellent value for money.
I booked this workshop last year before we were hit with lockdown. It was well worth the wait. I started by exploring a series of mark-making techniques and by setting up a screen for breakdown printing. After lunch, which was delicious, I did some silk screen printing. Some years ago, I had taken a workshop in this and although I had a fab day on that occasion, I felt no desire to return to it. However, under Kathryn’s guidance I explored a different method and an alternative printing medium – and found I could make beautiful things. I will be doing screen-printing again. Finally, I worked on the breakdown printing. Oh, my goodness, what a joy! Whilst I had been shown what could be done when I lifted the screen after the first print, I could not believe the beauty of what I had achieved. I will be revisiting this technique again. Absolutely wonderful, in the true sense of the word. Kathryn was a gentle calming presence, a generous teacher and very patient at moments when I became indecisive. Just a lovely person and a lovely way to spend the day; my soul has received nourishment. And I still have the unwrapping and finishing to look forward to. I’ll be back in the Autumn, if I may.
Response from Kathryn Green Textiles:Thank you so much Jayne.
