I always love Kate's workshop. They are well organised, and Kate's careful preparation means everything you need is readily available, so you can focus on creating with clay in a safe and relaxing environment. She is a thoughtful and inspiring teacher/potter, passionate about sharing her enthusiasm for ceramics. Clay as a canvas focused on using a variety of glazes and exploring a range of techniques that can be used on mainly unfired but also fired clay. I found it really useful to just experiment with the glazes with the added benefits of working with others doing the same!
Response from Kate Schuricht Ceramics:H Kirsty. Thanks for the kind and helpful feedback. It was good to see all the students experimenting with the underglaze colours onto leather hard clay and really pushing the materials to see what could be achieved. It is a really versatile technique and helps to get colour onto the pieces at an early stage, so I am glad that you enjoyed the process.
I really enjoyed the relief textureand colour on clay workshop. It was just the tonic needed at this time and I've already made some blank items ,ready to explore the technique further. The Cowshed was a stunning venue, but Kate's organisation, encouraging teaching style and attention to Covid safety detail made it a brilliant morning.Thank you ,I hope to return 😊
Response from Kate Schuricht Ceramics:Hi Margaret
Kate’s course was both relaxing and inspiring. She has a great way of teaching you without feeling like you need to remember. Everything feels very experiential and fluid.
I always learn so much from Kate because her experience of working with clay is very extensive but also because she really wants to see each person grow as an artist.
I can’t wait to see how my glazes have turned out once fired and hope to be able to attend another course very soon
Response from Kate Schuricht Ceramics:Thanks for your feedback, Jo. It was so rewarding to see your designs and clay pieces develop over the course of just one day. It was a very productive session all round.
Kate made us very welcome in her charming studio. Despite my lack of experience - or just call me a beginner - Kate made me feel very comfortable. Everyone can work in his and her own pace, without any pressure but a lot of patience. There’s plenty of material to experience with and to succeed in the end. Since I live further away, Kate is so nice to post my work after she has fired it. What a nice day we had!
Response from Kate Schuricht Ceramics:Thank you, Ute. I really enjoyed seeing your ideas develop as you explored the techniques over the course of the day. You really used the resources well and made some lovely pieces. They are being fired tonight and so will be sent on to you after glazing!
It couldn't be more perfect! Thanks to Kate we spent a creative day in most charming setting - all COVID-save surrounded by inspiring materials.
We had the space to indulge in our little projects but also share ideas with our extremly nice participants. Thank you Kate!
Response from Kate Schuricht Ceramics:I am so pleased that you enjoyed the workshop. The Cowshed setting is really special and adds some extra inspiration to the day. I really enjoy teaching there.
What a fabulous way to spend the day! We had endless fun being creative with clay tiles in whatever shapes and sizes we chose. There were plenty of resources! We also used porcelain clay. Kate is then going to fire them so I can’t wait to see the finished pieces. It takes place in a magical part of the country too. So don’t hesitate in signing up!
Response from Kate Schuricht Ceramics:It was such a lovely day and it was inspiring to see all the beautiful, graphic ideas you came up with. Your wood block type was a great addition to the resources, so thank you for sharing those with the students. The tiles are now being fired, so it won't be long before you can decide on how you want them glazed. I will send you some photos soon......
So nice to be able to attend in person. Kate took real care with preparation, hygiene, and COVID security. Felt totally safe. Learned lots of new techniques and was able to follow my own inspiration with very helpful suggestions and guidance. Would highly recommend this to anyone wanting to go way beyond dipping in a glaze bucket!
Response from Kate Schuricht Ceramics:I am so glad that you enjoyed your day and learnt some new creative processes. I hope that you can use the techniques in your NVQ course and continue to develop your ideas. It was great seeing the 3D work you made. Happy making!
This was my second workshop with Kate. Once again I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone wanting to try something new and creative in a friendly, relaxed environment. Kate organises everything for you, including the tidying up at the end. She was enthusiastic and encouraging, inspiring us all to experiment with texture and colour. Thank you Kate, I'm looking forward to seeing my finished pots!
Response from Kate Schuricht Ceramics:Hello Kirsty. Thanks for your review. I am pleased that you enjoyed the workshop and the chance to experiment with a new technique. It was good to see you trying out the wax resist and the underglaze colour, with some lovely outcomes. Not long now before the pieces are ready! See you at 'Clay As A Canvas' in a few weeks.
Relaxed, informed, room for creative experiment, perfect for beginners like me.
Response from Kate Schuricht Ceramics:Hi Julie.
After Kate's clear demonstration, it was fun to try out a new technique. Kate creates a relaxed atmosphere, making it easy for people to experiment, she is very encouraging. I really enjoyed it, thank you again Kate :)
This was my first workshop with Kate and I would recommend it !
The venue was nice too.
Response from Kate Schuricht Ceramics:I am really glad you enjoyed the workshop, Dominique. Thanks for the feedback.
Kate is inspiring and fun. She manages to share her knowledge without being intimidating. We were given a wide choice of materials and encouraged to experiment and play. It was a lovely way to spend a day !In the current Covid situation she was meticulous without being bossy we felt perfectly safe throughout.
Response from Kate Schuricht Ceramics:Thank you, Jill. It was lovely seeing you so immersed in making some really beautiful pieces. I am glad you enjoyed your day and felt that you had discovered some new materials and techniques. I hope to see you again at another workshop!
I first enrolled in a one to one course with Kate when I was doing A-levels, when she helped me bring my "newspaper in the hedgerow" fantasy to life through imprinted plants and old letter plates. More recently, since graduating from a BA course in design and looking to move onto the next stage, she has mentored me towards launching my ceramics career with a series of half day sessions. We have worked on slip casting technique, surface decoration (onto both greenware and bisque) such as sgraffito/inlaying, glazing/glaze testing and image transfer application.
Having known Kate for many years I can attest to her wisdom and patience as a teacher, as well as her lovely nature and general enthusiasm. She is generous with her knowledge and experience, and keen to help you realise your ceramic ambitions. I would recommend her workshops to both beginners and intermediate potters looking to refine technique or expand their knowledge.
Response from Kate Schuricht Ceramics:Thank you, Henry. It is a pleasure working with you and seeing your skills grow and refine as you respond to new techniques and suggestions. Your creativity and graphic ability are so strong and your originality will take you far in the ceramic art world.
I really enjoyed the 1 to 1 session with Kate and was thrilled by what I created with Kate's help. Kate took time to understand what I wanted to get out of it and helpfully suggested a number of different options, which was great as I don't have much experience to draw on.
Kate helped me to bring my ideas to life and made suggestions to try things that I wouldn't normally have attempted - such as drawing on one piece which turned out wonderfully.
Kate is great to learn from and a pleasure to spend time with - relaxed productivity! I'd love to do it again and would highly recommend a one to one course to anyone who wants to learn and explore their creativity.
Response from Kate Schuricht Ceramics:Hi Nicky. Thanks for taking the time to review your two days with me. It was great fun and really productive, with some beautiful pieces coming out of the kiln. Congratulations! I was very impressed with what you made and I hope you don't mind me using the photos of your lovely work to show other students.
Ceramic workshops with Kate are something I always look forward to. She is so knowledgable about her craft that I feel I can ask any question about any aspect of ceramics in general and she will have an answer for me. Kate creates a very relaxed atmosphere in which to work with a great choice of materials to use as well as interesting tools to use for mark making. The main thing, though, that I totally appreciate is that she allows me to explore my ideas and experiment, which as an artist myself is so very important. If I need any help, Kate is always on hand with excellent guidance. The whole experience is thoroughly enjoyable.
Response from Kate Schuricht Ceramics:Thanks, Karen, it's always a pleasure to teach you and it has been really exciting to see your ceramics develop. Looking forward to some more adventures in clay with you.......
A big thank you to Kate for our team building session. We were looking for an creative activity which could cater for all abilities/ages as well as bond us as a team and Kate's session was exactly what we were looking for. The beautiful setting at The Hub to have lunch at beforehand was also very lovely and gave us a chance to relax and catch up before the activity started. I’ve only had good feedback from the team and we are looking forward to receiving our finished pieces!
Response from Kate Schuricht Ceramics:Thanks, Claire, it was great working with you all and I am glad you enjoyed the Team Building session. It was a lot of fun! The pieces are all ready so I will drop them off soon.
I learnt so much about working with clay, using textures, and engobe paints and even some experimentation with porcelin clay. I am already looking forward to more workshops with Kate who is an inspiring tutor and helps you achieve the results you want whilst encouraging experimentation.
