Description

Welcome to my Penny Mat Workshop! In this five hour workshop I will teach you how to make a candle mat, a mat based on US folkart which is traditionally known as a Penny Mat. Penny Mats were made using scraps of wool whereby the wool fabric was cut into penny shapes and joined together with decorative stitches to make a covering for a table, the mantel or the floor. Today, these mats are designed with a theme to link to the seasons, festivities or anything else to that matter. Modern penny mats are often created using woolfelt, enabling a wide range of fabulous colours to be incorporated into the design. During the workshop, you will be shown how to transfer the patterns onto fusible bond and how to transfer this to your cut mat. Basic stitches are applied; blanket stitch, back stitch, feather stitch and french knots feature in many of the kits. See www.mrsbrscraftstation.co.uk for the designs available. If you are not familiar with these stitches, you will be shown how to make them. By the end of the workshop, you will have made a terrific start in making your penny mat, feel confident about the applique process and will be able to take your woolfelt project home for completion. This workshop is perfect for those who have some basic handsewing skills and want to have a go at using simple applique techniques. It's also suitable for beginners who have nimble fingers and are eager to learn a new skill. Join us for an exciting, fun-filled workshop and create a stunning, handmade mat that you can use to decorate your home. They look lovely on a table with a hurricane lamp, vase of flowers or any seasonal decoration. Watch out - penny mats can be highly addictive and you may want to make one for each season! It is very relaxing and enormously satisfying as you see your mat take shape.

The workshop includes all materials- you will be given your mat in kit form and guided through the process. A light lunch will be offered from our local deli as well as unlimited coffee and tea.

Since leaving my role as a primary school teacher I have continued to work with children as a private tutor. Having plenty of time on my hands, I also design sewing kits and run craft workshops. I have grown to love working with wool felt, which makes an appearance in most of my creations. The texture, colours and durability of it makes it a joy to work with.
