In August 2011, after a successful career as a Graphic Designer, he chose a career as a full time artist painting wildlife and portraiture from his home in rural Dorset. He paints contemporary wildlife paintings, where the subject takes centre stage and the mood is set by light and shade. L Paul Matthews’ work attracted wide acclaim when he was a finalist in the David Shepherd Foundation’s competition for Wildlife Artist of the Year. His picture, ‘The Passenger’ was selected ahead of thousands of entries from all over the world and received the ‘People’s Choice Award’ at The Mall Galleries, London. Almost simultaneously Paul was in the final of the BBC Wildlife Artist of the Year competition, receiving runner up in the Frozen Planet section with his polar bear portrait. More recently Paul’s portrait of a chimpanzee (Self Contemplation) received “The Chester Zoo Award” at the ‘National Exhibition of Wildlife Artists’ [envira-gallery id='3916'] As part of the team for TRIO Holidays, Paul will be offering an exciting workshop using watercolour, He will be exploring Nature in the Landscape. Demonstrating throughout. Planning and colour mixing. Creating a textured base for applying paint Genevieve Lavers Genevieve studied modern foreign languages at university and later in life trained to teach languages at secondary school. As a young child she was taught to paint with watercolours by a lady with long silver hair whom she one day lovingly referred to as an “old princess”. Creativity continued to be an important hobby. In her mid-forties she attended some printmaking courses at the Arts University of Bournemouth, and she was hooked. She subsequently left her job in education and ran printmaking workshops for 9 years at her Dorset home instead. In 2015 Genevieve spent a month in Beijing, where she fought her way onto the metro at 7 am every morning to arrive at the Hutong School in time for lessons in Mandarin Chinese. In the afternoons she was free to wander (and wonder at) the sights of the city. Mastering the language naturally fostered an interest in oriental art, iconography and culture, which has remained a rich seam of inspiration in her art ever since. In 2017 she returned to China, this time for a two-week tea trip to several main tea-producing provinces, where by chance she met and befriended an artist specialising in Chinese painting. Two years later, Genevieve travelled to Shanghai and onward to Wuhu in Anhui Province, where she spent five intensive days in the artist’s home learning to paint flowers and birds using traditional Chinese brush techniques. Genevieve continues to practise the techniques she learnt with Teacher Wang in Wuhu, as well as developing her own ideas for fusing oriental painting techniques and composition with landscape and nature found on her own doorstep in rural Dorset. Genevieve Lavers Blue tit rooster wisteria composition Morning: There will be a brief historical overview of Chinese painting, followed by a short explanation of materials and other things to consider. You will be painting on unsized paper using the Xiĕyì style (写意) with Chinese black ink. There will be several short demonstrations and an opportunity to practise the main strokes. You will be able to practise painting, amongst other things: Bamboo Orchids You will learn about controlling the water to ink ratio on your brush to provide tone, as well as getting used to the idiosyncrasies of painting on very absorbent paper! Afternoon: Demonstration and practise:  painting wisteria using Chinese watercolours. Short discussion on composition in oriental paintings – flowers and still life – using visual examples of Genevieve’s work. Still life painting: flowers and tea ware. Practise the brush techniques on a composition of your choosing, using the seasonal flowers and foliage on display as inspiration. Podi Lawrence Podi has been a full time artist and teacher for over 40-years having exhibited in London at the Mall Galleries with the SWA, UA; the Paris Salon (Bronze medal in 1994). Residency with the English National Ballet in 1994/5. In 1999 She moved to Canada and enjoyed 9 years setting up and curating a gallery in Waterloo, Ontario and also did a  residency with the Waterloo Jazz Festival and the K-W Symphony Orchestra. She then moved to Panama in 2008 where she was inspired by the shadows and produced a series of 16 oil paintings.  Returning to the UK in 2011. Podi has expertise in most painting mediums and have used watercolours mostly in sketchbooks when painting en plein air; to investigate a scene/object or light/shadows. She often added line with a pencil or pen and written notes to remind her of something she may want to include if it is taken to the next stage of oil painting.  [envira-gallery id='3906'] Workshops bring together eager learners with a wide spectrum of knowledge, standard and experience. Podi aims to inspire, inform and encourage each student to expand their own special way of producing an image in watercolours, by demonstrating various techniques  and experiment with the medium. She encourages them to keep a sketchbook using pen, ink and watercolours. And to make sketches with pencil/pen at every opportunity. It is with this knowledge that we can produce better paintings. This is a very unique painting break. Each day you will take part in the workshop with a different tutor learning from their experience and talk through tuition and watching their demonstrations. You will go away with a whole wealth of experience and pampered stay in Bournemouth’s luxury Marsham Court Hotel.
